Files, Ceekreaches- * Carriers of Germs Movie actor Vincent Price had a big problem in the recent science fiction thriller, "The Fly". Because of exposure to a cell changing machine, he kept changing into a fly - he couldn't get rid of the bugs in his system. Man also has a big problem getting rid of flies and cockroaches - insects he would like to eliminate because they may carry disease-csusing organisms. Unfortunstely present methods of control seem to be only partially effective. Both kinds of insects may be vectors (carriers) of typhoid and dysentery: flies slso frequently carry Salmonella and other disease producing organisms snd cockroaches can transmit food poisoning. Although flies snd cockroaches have been the unwanted guests of man since before the dawn of history - following him into every room of his house and sitting at his table-they never learned the social graces, like washing their hands before eating. Flies find sewage or animal manure just as appetizing as tuna fish salad and while feeding on the salad, may be contaminating it with bacteria from the sewage. Animal manure, sewage and inadequately covered and stored garbage are excellent breeding places for flies. Two or more generations of flies may be produced per month in the warm months - fresh horse manure used as a nursery can produce as many as 1200 fly larvae per pound Flies can get around very speedily for their size - they cruise at about four miles an hour and can travel as far as 20 miles, the majority get about a mile from their hatching place. Starchy materials - any kind of bakery goods, cereals, book binding, wallpaper and dead animals are cockroaches' favorite dishes - they con taminate food like flies do, by defecating and vomiting as they feed, leaving a disagreeable odor and taste. Cockroaches live in the cracks and crannies of a house or restaurant - they also live in sewers and are nocturnal in their habits. Cockroaches can be eliminated with insecticide and by proper storage and protection of food. Breeding places for flies can be eliminated if garbage is stored properly and sewage and manure are carefully disposed of. The McHenry County Health Department emphasizes en vironmental sanitation and suggests that county-wide adequate garbage and refuse storage will help to eliminate fly and cockroach problems. The Health Department encouraged weed cutting on properties as a means of reducing insect populations which find tall grasses and weeds a harborage. Any establishment that serves food is regularly in spected for insect problems by the Health Department.
