For many of us the passage of summer has definite "markers'" which measure its progress from spring to autumn For thousands of Illinoisans, one of those "markers" is the Illinois state fair The fair will take place this year Aug 10-20. Although the state fair provides enjoyment for hun dreds of thousands of people, many fair visitors do not realize the potential hazards that exist when such large numbers of people eat, drink and come into close physical contact with one another. Most state fair visitors also do not realize that, behind the glitter and the lights, the Illinois Department of Public Health is working to protect the health and well being of those who visit the fair In an all-out effort to prevent outbreaks of disease at ths fair the state health department conducts food inspections, insect control and general sanitation services And to treat fairgoers who do become ill or injured. Public Health arranges for first aid stations, medical personnel and am bulance service All food service establish ments at the fair are inspected daily Public health inspectors check the temperature of refrigerators; they check dish washing facilities, cooking and serving procedures; and they inspect equipment and utensils used in the preparation of food Insect control services provided by the state hes!thi department include the spraying of cattle trucks after the livestock have been unloaded The spraying kills any insect larvae that might be present in the vehicles Gar bage can storage areas and ^livestock areas adjacent to food concession stands are also sprayed each day Whenever necessary, eating areas are sprayed with in secticide at night, after the last customer has gone and all food has been put away For the 1978 fair, the state health department has arranged for four first aid stations on the fairgrounds, staffed by Red Cross volun teers, to take care of headaches, blistered heels and minor scratches, bumps or bruises An ambulance, staffed with paramedics, will be available around-the-clock to transport anyone who needs more sophisticated medical attention to a nearby hospital Public Health has also arranged for staffing a hospital, on the fairgrounds, which can accommodate as many as eight stretcher patients A physician and nurses will be on duty 24 hours a day; and there will be a nurse on 24-hour duty at the 4-H building Four additional ambulances will be on duty during the United States Auto club (USAC) races In addition to all these ser vices. the state health depart ment will have on display, "The Toothmobile" - a mobile dental office So, if you are planning to attend the state fair, remember that the Illinois Department of Public Health is working very hard to help you enjoy your visit' f Building Permits 1 Building permits recently issued by the Department of Building and Zoning for McHenry County include: Frank A.
