They consist of several local scenes taken on the streets of McHenry and are most in teresting to McHenry residents who saw themselves as others see them. At the regular August meeting of the city cotmcil, Alderman Knox introduced a motion that the mayor be in structed to publish a notice that all property owners must clean their vacant lots of rubbish, weeds, etc. A communication was read from 4he West McHenry state bank, asking the city to pay past due an ticipation warrants and in terest to the amount of $7,382.75. Ed Koepke carried off the prize at the Palace Alleys last week with a high score of 257 which won for hftn the five doUar gold piece. Mrs. George Worts won the ladies' prize of a box of candy with the high score of 145. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of August 18, 1938) Quality and not quantity seems to have been the in spiration for one of the loveliest flower gardens in McHenry. And it is the garden of Robert Thompson on Main street. Here from early spring to late fall, may be found in their season, the exquisite blooms of the rose, peony, delphinium, columbine, gladiolus and dahlia. Last week at the tenth annual flower show of the Garden club at Algonquin, Mr. Thompson's gladiolus and dahlias received a first and second prize and two honorable mentions. Pauline Palmer, Chicago painter of note, who was born in McHenry, died Aug. 15 in Trondheim, Norway. Mrs. Palmer was considered by many critics, the outstanding woman painter in America. For more than thirty years her work has won acclaim here and abroad. Many of her pictures are in the permanent collection of the Art Institute, the National Academy in New York and many smaller museums. At the work shop he will sing the leading tenor roles in Puccini's "La Boheme", Verdi's "La Traviata", Biset's "Carmen" and "Amahl and the Night Visitors": - TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 14, 1968) Paying tribute to the proud history of Illinois in its 150th year is the project recently completed by eight girls of Scout Troop 41 of McHenry, who earned top rating in the Cadet class at the county fair An unique aspect of the project was the fact that the girls selected the tribute as an original effort toward earning a badge Because it was not among standard offerings, it was necessary for them to compile the many requirements Scholarships were given to outstanding young people of the American Lutheran church to attend a week of intensive training at Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa Recipients of the scholarships were Broc Olson, son of Mr and Mrs. L Alan Olson and Rod Roadman, son of Mr and Mrs Roy Roadman Both are members of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church. McHenry Over $12,000 in federal funds have been awarded to twenty Northern Illinois university graduate students majoring in special education, among them Mrs Lillian Forsberg of Wonder Lake, in the study area of physically handicapped What Just One Person Can Do Finla> Macrae, Forest Restorer One of Scotland's most majestic symbols, t^e Scotch pine, has a friend in kilted, red bearded highlander Finlay Macrae Mr Macrae, a Scottish district officer for Britain's Forestry commission, hopes*to* restore the almost vanished forests of pines that once covered 6,000 square miles of ancient Scotland. Swept away 200 years ago by massive harvests for use in the furnaces of the industrial revolution, the tall, graceful trees now cover less than 40 square miles of Scotland But Mr Macrae is deter mined to restore the pines that he feels are a vital part of his country's heritage For ten years, he has nursed hundreds of thousands of pine seedlings and planted them among the heather of Glen Affric Erecting seven-foot fences around the seedlings. Mr Macrae has kept away browsing sheep and red deer Now some trees have begun to shed their seeds, beginning the cycle of natural regeneration Wildcats, pine martens, crossbills and blackcock - species once threatened by the loss of the pine habitat they favored are returning to Glen Affric "The first time I flew over the highlands I was appalled by how little vegetation there was." says Mr Macrae, "and yet there's no doubt a romantic attachment to the Scotch pine, and to the idea of the great forest of Caledonia If something is truly lovely, why shouldn't it be left like that" It's our national heritage " Finlay Macrae will die long before he could see his pines replace the towering forests cut down 200 years ago Genuine concern for the world around us doesn t ask "What's in it for mer' but rather. "What can I do to make the world a better place for others0" Prairie Day To Be Observed In County Aug. 19 On Aug 19 from 9 30 until noon, the general public will be invited to go to the Queen-Anne Prairie conservation site for an experience in real prairie "roots" Guides stationed around this pioneer cemetery and state designated Class A prairie will give talks on prairie plants, prairie wildlife and .
