McHenry unit was announced as being seventh in the state in Veterans Craft, having pur­ chased $1,356.50 of Veterans Craft merchandise. Mrs. Raymond (Betty Lou ) Smith is the Veterans Craft chairman. . The McHenry unit was in eighth place in high mem­ bership with 390 members. There are over 800 units in the Department of Illinois. The Press Book, com­ munications chairmanship, made and compiled by Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper of the McHenry unit, was one of five books in department com­ petition and took a second place personal award. Mrs. Cooper had previously won first place in the 11th district elimination and first place in the 2nd district division contest. The Uth district press book, also compiled by Mrs. Cooper, took a first place award and this book was sent to national for further judging. Mrs. Roy (Lauretta) Homo, Uth district president, received a plaque from the Department of Illinois and a trophy from the Seeing Eye foundation for her efforts, with the help of the Uth district, to be able to purchase a 'seeing eye dog' for a blind veteran. Special Guests were the Chicago Mayor Michael J. Bilandic; department com­ mander, the American Legion, James Kissner; Mrs. Edward <Peggy) Kouba, chapeau departmental, Eight and Forty; Mrs. Charles (Rae) Shaw, past department and past national president; Mrs. Alvin Moltzen, national FIRST CHILD Mr. and Mrs. Dennis J. Justen of 1717 Park lane, an­ nounce the birth of their first child, Michael Dennis, July 31, „ at McHenry hospital. The young man weighed 8 lbs., 1 oz., and his paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph M. Justen of McHenry. The maternal grandparents are Walter Sturm of Chicago, and Mrs. Mildred Sturm of Holiday, Fla. NEW SON Christian Phillip came to make his home with his parents, Byron and Marilyn Verdung, 904 N. River road, via the McHenry hospital, on July 31, weighing 6 lbs., 5 oz. His maternal grandmother is Mrs. Helen Wolter of McHenry. The paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold Verdung of Ft. Myers, Fla. FIRST SON Mr. and Mrs. John (Jack) Walters welcomed their first child, a son, Brandon Jack, on July 30 at the McHenry hospital. He weighed 7 lbs., 6 oz. His paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Walters, Sr.. of McHenry; his maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCloud of Fox Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Frank of Elgin. The paternal great- grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Willard Hillman of Hernando, Fla. service was held for the 889 deceased members of the Department of Illinois. This included seventy-two Gold Star and 101 charter members. Mrs. Homo will be a delegate to the national convention to be held in August in New Orleans and Mrs. George (Ruth) Mrachek was elected by the convention body as an alter­ nate. The convention ended with the impressive and beautiful installation of the 1978-79 department officers. Mrs. Sanford (Mary) Patterson of Lincoln was installed as the new department president; Mrs. Don (Margaret) Eckhardt of Armington unit was installed as first vice-president; Mrs. A.J. (Margaret) Dorn of Mundelein was installed as second vice-president; Ms. Rosemary Loparco of Chicago was re-installed as treasurer; and Mrs. Clarence (Virginia) Kates of Chicago will be the new department historian. A son, Adam Christopher, was born to Mr. and Mrs. James R. Rowland, 3011 Pool street, McHenry, on July 30, at Highland Park hospital, Highland Park. The baby has a brother, James Andrew, 64 years old for a playmate. His maternal grandmother is Mildred Kuczwara of Chicago and his paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Durverd Rowland of Savona, N.Y. NEW ARRIVAL A daughter Was born to Mr. and Mrs, Robert M. Martens, 3315 Sherwood Forest drive, Spring Grove, on July 29, at Holy Family hospital, Des Plaines. The baby's name is Amanada Beth. She weighted 9 lbs., 4 oz. She was welcomed home by Rob, 11, and Chris, 8. The maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thomas of Mt. Prospect. Church Observes Anniversary With Many Attractions St. John's Festival will be this weekend, Aug. 11-12-13, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. ALASKA VISIT Marlene Goetschel toured Alaska this past month with her mother, Mrs Mae Brunkhorst of Masonville, and two of her sisters, Mary Jo McFadden, Randalia, and Patricia Maas, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They flew to Anchorage and then took an 800 mile scenic bus trip through parts of Alaska and the Yukon. Next they boarded a cruise ship for a 700 mile trio down the inland passage, visiting Skagway, Juneau and Kitchieme. The cruise ended at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The next part of their journey took them on an exciting 1000 mile bus tour through British Columbia to Seattle, Wash. After spen­ ding a day there visiting a family friend, and touring the U.S.S Missouri, they flew back to restful Johnsburg, U.S.A. Shark, at St. Peter's church, Volo. Maid of Honor was Nfrs. Viola Justen, bridesmaid, Mrs. Herlinda Stilling, now deceased, Flower girl, Mrs. Irene Gaylord, Best man, Elmer Diedrich. Mass was offered for their intention on Saturday evening, July 15 at St. John the Baptist Catholic church, Johnsburg. They celebrated on Sunday, July 30, with a dinner at the American Legion hall, McHenry, for the family and invited guests Honored guests were Mr and Mrs. Philip (91 years), Mary Thennes, Evelyn's father, and her uncle, Mr. and Mrs John (94 years) (Ann,) Thennes They are the parents of eleven children six girls and five boys, thirty-one grand­ children and one great- grandson. Jason is almost a year old, the son of Mr and Mrs. Dane and Terri Kanable of Viola, Wis Their daughter Mrs Sally (Leroy) Cahill, surprised them by flying in from Phoenix, Ariz Another daughter, Mrs Jo Ann (Robert) Harrington, also of Phoenix, was unable to attend Mrs. Barbara Sorenson resides in Salt Lake City, Utah Mrs Dolores Huffar (Walter) and family live in Woodstock, as well as Mrs Sue (Randy) Nawalaniec.
