Spring Grove Men's Golf Day Will Celebrate 25th Anniversary Spring Grove Men's Gold day will be celebrating its 25th annual outing on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Chapel Hill Country club with the usual golf, prizes and dinner. What makes this year special is the plan to honor the four originators of Golf Day: Joe Brown, Jr., A1 Schmeltzer, John Sheets, and Frank May, Jr On the third Thursday of August, 1953, these four men decided to play golf, have dinner and make a day of it. They had a great time, and did it again the nect year. It was so much fun, that the next year they asked a few more men to join them and then a few more the next year, and so the story goes. The participation grew until, after 7 or 8 years, it was decided to make it a Spring Grove Golf day, and to send letters of invitation to all those who had been involved previously, with each person allowed to bring one guest. A committee was picked. A master letter was composed, leaving all spots for changeable information blank for each year's committee to fill in as necessary. Tony Kappie arranged for trophies each year, for many years. There were three trophies given for winners, and one for bobbie prize. Only once^as the date changed, and no one remem bers why; but the change caused so much commotion that the date went back to, and still remains, the third Thur sday in August By some magic, the price has always been the same too Since this is the twenty-fifth year, it is fitting that there are plans to honor the four originators.
