DIVORCES There's An Answer (by Norman Vinrent IVuIr unci ^ Ruth Stafford Peale) Tired of Life Q. I am a 16 year old girl and I feel there is nothing to live for. I am into drugs really bad. I cannot face my problems alone. I have recently been thinking of suicide. I have tried to get help, but nothing seems to work. I am getting tired of life. Please send me a booklet that will help. A. You have made the mistake of thinking that drugs will give you life, whereas they destroy life. But suicide is a stupid solution. Your answer is to get out of drugs and get back into a normal, happy living pattern. We know that won't be easy. But neither is it impossible. Revise your life style and you will find happiness. We are sending you a booklet called The Power to Change Your Life. Follow the program it outlines and you can indeed change your life. Anyone wishing a free copy of the booklet may write to us at Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564. Disgusted and Bewildered by Rebellious Teenager Q. l am at my wit's end with my 15-year-old sot. He spends every cent he makes on himself and his friends. I believe it is for pot He tells me I am obligated to support him until he is 18. He is rebellious and thinks he knows everything. He steals and is dishonest. I hate to see my son turn into a street bum or pot head and wind up in jail. But I'm afraid that's where he is headed. I'm disgusted and bewildered and ready to give up on him. What can I do? A. With this inconsiderate and mixed-up boy you are not going t> get anywhere being at your "wit's end." Don't let this arrogant kid boss you around. Stand up to him. Don't fight or argue with him but calmly let him know the score. Discipline is the heritage of every child. If they don't get it at home, young people will have to get it the hard way somewhere else. All you are obligated to do for your son is to feed him, clothe him and see that he goes to school. Besides that, pray about him- but also be mighty firm with him. Husband is Silent Partner Q. Our problem is lack of communication. Sometimes if I don't ask my husband something we could go for days without even speaking. He volunteers no conversation whatsoever. I guess I am doomed to a quiet life. If we fussed over money, sex, drinking, infidelity, I think I would know what to do. I do love the guy, but oh, how I wish he would speak up. Sometimes I don't know if I should count my blessings or if I want a "silent partner" the rest of my life. Hope, encouragement, prayers, what do I need? A. Perhaps your real problem is that you have a moody husband. And that is a psychological sickness. You are lucky that he doesn't drink or gamble or run around with women, but only has a depressive, gloomy moodiness. Of course, that is bad enough. What to do about it is, first, to live with it. Second, study how to help him avoid plunging into this gloom. Third, try to pray him out of it Fourth, study how this tendency of his developed. Then consult a local psychologist or psychiatrist who may be able to help him find release from his problem. If there is something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale to discuss in this column, write to them in care of Box 500, Pawling, NY 12S64. If you would like to talk directly with a Prayer Partner, call Prayer Line 212-481-1050. Reduced long-distance rates are in effect nights and weekends. The 13-member board of directors of the Assessors' division of Township Officials of Illinois took the action last weekend at their semi-annual meeting in Decatur. The board represents 500 assessors throughout Illinois. "The Thompson Proposition brings the truth to the people and gives them a chance to stand up for themselves," said Ronald Harms, co-chairman of the assessors' legislative committee. "It is a way to remind our state, county and local governments that there is only one true way to cut taxes and that is to cut spending," Harms said. Harms said that his organization would be active in HEARING AIDS New Aids, Batteries, and Service. CALL BOLGIRS DRUG STORE 385-4500 circulating petitions to assist in gathering 625,000 signatures of registered voters by Aug. 21. If the petition drive is suc cessful, the Thompson Proposition would place a question on the November ballot asking voters if they favor ceilings on taxes and spending. The referendum would be advisory to the Illinois Legislature. The keenest punish ment is to ignore a man who tries to insult you. i V.A. NEWS If a veteran wishes to use his GI Bill benefits to further his education or skills for a specific job, a special VA student loan is available, Donald Ramsey, director of the VA regional office in Chicago, says. Student loans up to $2,500 a year can be applied for under regulations now in effect at the VA The student must be enrolled in an accredited and approved institution of higher learning as a full-time student. "About half of the Vietnam veterans of Illinois have taken advantage of some type of training with GI Bill assistance," Ramsey said. "Many veterans who would like to attend training before their eligibility expires are not aware that the loan program exists." Loans granted under the VA program do not require their repayment until* after graduation. Interest on the loan does not begin until after graduation. Veterans draw $311 a month under the GI Bill for attending school full-time, and according to Ramsey, most students need additional funds to complete their training. Veterans who still have eligibility time can receive full information from colleges, schools, veterans service organizations and the Veterans Administration. Nice Lad A lady was entertaining the small son of her married friend. "Are you quite sure you can cut your meat, Willy?" she asked, after watching him for a moment. "Oh, yessum," he replied without looking up. "We often have it as tough as this at home." The McHenry Plaindealer Established 1875 3812 W»st Elm Street Phone 385-01 70 McHenry.
