«. There's An Answer (by Norman Vincent Peule und Ruth Stafford Peale) Abused And Afraid Q My marriage has been very stormy from the beginning. My husband used to beat me. He would see something out of place, a footprint on the floor or a razor blade missing-it had to be left by one of my men. If I would quit footing my men we wouldn't run out of food. During all four pregnancies he abused me. The children were never his; they didn't look like him. I have been put down so much I am really afraid to try anything on my own. I want to be a better wife and mother and feel good about myself. Please send some answers. A. Your husband's reactions indicate a man with an unhealthy th&igh pattern. And you have a difficult problem on your hands. One thing is sure, you should never let this man abuse you. Stand up to him and don't let yourself become put down. The more you stay in control of yourself and the more healthy and normal you act, the better you can deal with his sick thoughts. Try emphasizing in your mind the good things in your home. Take pride in your children; keep thinking at yourself as a good, worthwhile person. You will soon feel bettor about yourself, and in time your husband may catch the new spirit. We are sending you a copy of our booklet. You Can Overcome Any Problem, which has helped others with problems such as yours, anyone else wishing a free copy may write to us in care of Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564. Wants Teen-Age Equality Q. My husband and I have bought our first home. We are in the military, and my husband has to go to Korea alone for one year. Our 14-year-old son has been nothing but problems to us the past three years. He has problems in school also. We feel he resents authority of any kind, plus he wants to be equal to us. I'm truly concerned about trying to raise him alone, but I must do this regardless. Do you have any suggestions? A. One way to handle this boy is to be patient enough to listen to him. Just listen respectfully to all of the stuff he hands out. Don't argue with him. Then say, "O.K., as two equals, let us analyze your ideas." Try reasoning with him, explaining it every step of the way. He may respond to such a mature process. You might also suggest that your son take over some of his father's responsibilities. With his developing ego, he might go for that. But whatever you do, don't let him push you around. What's A Dog's Future? Q. I love animal pets, especially dogs. Is this wrong? Their eyes express a knowledge and love with a depth. Is there a future life for them? What does God tell as about the worth of these pets? A. Of course it is not wrong to love a dog or any pet. And they are indeed lovable. They become a part of your family life. We do not know whether there is a future life for animals. We do know that God created them and is loving, and we can therefore trust them to His care. Protecting The Heart More than 62 percent of the five million veterans of the Vietnam Era who have trained under the GI Bill used this valuable entitlement to attend college. Thought works in silence, so does virtue. One might erect statues to silence. -Thomas Carlyle. The Illinois Heart association recommends that children in families with a high risk of heart or blood vessel disease be examined by a physician and be placed on a corrective diet if they have excessive levels of fat in their blood. Fats such as cholesterol or triglyceride can cause a con dition known medically as hyperlipidemia, which is related to atherosclerosis, a disease in which arteries become clogged with fatty deposits. The Heart association added that although evidence does not yet support a recommendation that cholesterol and saturated fat should be reduced in a diet of all children, the public should be advised that such modification appears safe and very likely to be beneficial in reducing or retarding the risk of atherosclerotic disease in adult years: A high risk family is defined as one in which either or both parents have hyperlipidemia or high blood pressure or a family in which parents or grand parents have suffered a heart attack or a stroke or developed a blood vessel disease before the age of 50. Children from high risk families should be examined carefully for hyperlipidemia with at least two, preferably three, repetitive samplings of their blood fats, says the Heart association Those whose cholesterol and triglyceride levels rank in the top 10 percent of their age and sex groups should be placed on a diet specific to the type of hyperlipidemia the child has, after ruling out other diseases or drugs as the cause. The Illinois Heart association is an affiliate of the American Heart,, association, which developed the statement on hyperlipidemia in children. The statement said opinion is nearly unanimous among physicians and scientists about changing the diet of children with diet induced hyperlipidemia. Contributing to the statement were Dr. Charles J. Glueck of the University of Cincinati; Dr. Henry McGill, Jr., University of Texas, San An tonio; Dr. Robert E. Shank, Washington university, St. Louis; and Dr. Ronald M. Lauer, University hospital, Iowa City. Gl home loan eligibility can be used an unlimited number of times provided the veteran applicant has no outstanding VA guaranteed loan.
