SECTION 2 - PAGE 2 - PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, lt78 Twice Told Tales I »SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS96SSSSSSSSSSSSŜ FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 30, 1928) The short stretch of pavement on Route 61 south of McHenry from Main street to the comer at the top of Knox's hill was opened for travel Tuesday morning, thus com pleting the cement highway from the state line north of Richmond to Terra Cotta, through Richmond Ringwpod and McHenry The pavement is now being laid south of Terra Cotta to the road leading into Crystal Lake The distance of the cement ribbon from the state line south is about "20 miles and traverses three townships Bonds of the Third Liberty loan are due Sept 15 and will earn no interest after that date Bring yours to this bank and we will take care of the details West McHenry State Bank ' The Ringwood Homecoming association held its third an nual meeting at the M W A hall at Ringwood Aug 23 In vitations to attend this meeting had been extended far and wide and over 200 people gathered to enjoy the day together FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sep tember 6. 19381 The familiar tones of the school bell were heard again Tuesday morning after the summer vacation calling the young people back to school after several months of play According to the registration the enrollment at the high school is approximately 195. although it is anticipated that a few more entries may swell the total to 200 The third distribution of 1937 taxes is being made by County Treasurer Lester Edinger The distribution will bring the total amount distributed by county treasurer up to $929,508 or 75 percent of the total bill of $1,257,834.16 being collected A total of 1,367 people in McHenry county received relief during the month of July according to a report made in a bulletin issued by the IERC commission To take care of these people the various townships in the county con tributed $7,303 42 and the state $1,187 The number on relief in July dropped from 1,480 in June and it cost an average of $16.50 to care for these people in July, as compared to $16 85 in June TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sep tember 3, 1953) Field Enterprises, Inc , has announced the promotion of three top executives to the rank of vice-president effective Oct 1 One of these is a home town man, Howard V. Phalin, general sales manager for the east half of the country, who had dedicated his many talents jto educational selling since shortly after he graduated from the McHenry high school. It was in 1923 that a book salesman called in McHenry and sold him a reference book The same gentleman later introduced him to one of the company's key officials, who enrolled him as a summer representative Mr Phalin remained a part time sales representative throughout his four years at the university of Notre Dame The local council Knights of Columbus, under the leader ship of the newly elected grand knight, George Larkin. an nounces a party and dance at the American Legion home Sept. 6, which will mark the beginning of many activities during the fall and winter months TEN YEARS AGO • Taken from the files of Sep tember 4,1968) The Rev Eliot Nitz, S D S (Salvatorian Father) will be ordained to the priesthood Sept 6 in St Mary's church, Lan- dover Hills, Md He will offer his first Mass at St Mary's, McHenry, Sept 15 Father Nitz is the son of Mrs Helen (Nitz) Streske of McHenry He was born in Hammond, Ind . FRIEND OF THE POOR Lawrence Albert's story might be considered to have a sad ending But he doesn't admit the story is ended. He had grown Up poor. He knew the embarrassment of wearing shoes held together by string But he became the successful owner of two dry cleaning businesses in St. Louis and a tavern that was a popular meeting place for blacks in that city * One night in 1966, when Mr Albert saw in a TV show, children in Mississippi who were starving and cold, he was deeply moved Within two weeks; two truckloads of clothing and food were rolling south Then he realized there "twenty years of exceptional service to McHenry's township as road commissioner." The party was held at the McHenry Country club arranged by the McHenry township officials Sister Mary Louise, S.D.S., the former Mary Lou Kagan, professed her final vows as a Sister of the Divine Savior in a recent ceremony at the order's community house in Milwaukee, Wis Sister made her final commitment as a religious during a concelebrated Mass. were barefoot kids in his own neighborhood. He'went to shoe dealers and manufacturers for help. He recruited friends and social workers. The result was Aunts and Uncles, Inc., an organization with 500 members who contribute $12 a year, enough to provide six children with shoes at cost. Lawrence Albert and volunteers fitted and gave free shoes to thousands of children. He had turned over half of one of his dry cleaning establish ments for storage and weekly distribution But the neigh borhood was deteriorating. Robberies wiped out the shoe supply three times. Business went downhill and he had to close one store. The tavern was robbed: he closed that. His health failed. Then a fire destroyed his last source of income, and the wholesale shoe svmply He was broke. Already- intclved friends took over Aunts and Uncles, Inc.
