The president motions for silence He looks tired, distraught President: All right, here I am down to around 40 percent in the polls, we have an election coming up iji November and - as if that wasn't enough - we have double-digit inflation on our hands Once, just this once, I want a clear, simple answer to this question just what is causing inflation" Then I want to know what we're going to do about it Bosworth. you're the economic genius around here. What do you say" Barry Bosworlh: Well sir, I checked with the National Observatory and they weren't able to confirm your theory that sunspots cause inflation. President: I could've sworn they do Well. Bergland, what do your experts say over at Agriculture0 Secretary Bergland: Mr President, we have had sci^ptific teams all over Kansas and Colorado and we simply cannot verify your theory that it's the locusts that are causing inflation Bobert Strauss: I say it's the Japanese Z. Brzezinski. You're wrong. Bob It's what my friends in Peking call the Polar Bear - the Russians They're behind all this inflation Hah-hah Bosworth Mr President, the Republicans over on the Hill keep saying that inflation is caused by government spen ding more than it takes in. You •know, deficits, like the i$60 billion we've built into this year's budget They say there should be a combination of big tax cuts across-the-board, to stimulate economic growth, plus a restraint in federal spending President: Restrain spen ding0 Ridiculous How re we going to get any votes from -that0 As" for tax cuts, •Blumenthal's experts at the -^Treasury tell us that if we had -something like that Roth-Kemp • ; bill, the tax cuts would add up - to about $24.5 billion the first year, and that's money the Treasury won't get, so it means a bigger deficit and more in flation Bosworth: Begging your pardon, sir. but that's what the Treasury experts told Harding, Coolidge and Kennedy ad they went ahead with big tax cuts In w each case, the cuts brought in y- more revenue to the Treasury, not less Wj}' President: Forget it. Barry 'Let's stick to meaningful tax reform, like the three-martini lunch Secretary Blumenthal: Well, Mr President, you know your your own tax program has had some rough sledding in Congress Perhaps we could seize the initiative by pin pointing the blame for inflation where it really belongs Bosworth You mean business and labor" That s what I've been saying all along Secretary Blumenlhal Well it's worth discussing President You re right Mike Br»rry If it weren't for Justness raising prices and George Mean> always squawking about higher wages, no one would worry about in flat ion I think we d better dig into this matter of wage and price controls Blumenthal There s some encouraging support building for wage an price controls Why, just the other day I saw favorable comments from John Kenneth Galbraith Ralph Nader and Hobart Row en the Washington Post s economics columnist But, I also read a worrisome report by an academic type over at the Heritage foundation He traced the history of wage and price controls back forty centuries and said they ve never worked He said they cause shortages create black markets increase non wage prerequisites and cause undue government in terference in people s lives He ••ven cited Hermann Goering of all people who. as a war prisoner in 1946. told an American correspondent I tried it and failed in Nazi Germany This writer also says Nixon s wage and price con trols probably made inflation actually worse not better H a m i l t o n J o r d a n The writer s probably some right wing nut Bos*orth Maybe but do you remember the shortage of paper bags at the super markets during the Nixon controls" It wasn t because we ran out of timber it was because the producers were shifting to products that had higher profit margins So. we had a surplus of greeting cards and wrapping paper and no paper bags President That sounds like a lot of crepe hanging to me I stil l say we ought to take a hard look at the idea (. Hafshoon Mr President, I'm no economist as you know but I have a suggestion--JVhile ^ )- your experts are out studying wage and price controls, why don't we go public for big capital gains and income tax cuts an claim the credit for them? After all, it worked in California for Jerry Brown. PUhffliPlaM Husband-Why does a woman say she has been shop ping when she hasn't bought a thing? Wife--Why does a man say he's been fishing when he hasn't csught s thing? Research Grant To Marian Teacher Frank Marks, teacher of English at Marian Central Catholic high school, has been awarded a research grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will provide the support necessary to research the historical and bibliographic significance of a book in the Marks collection, a Bible published in Paris in 1552. The Bible is in Latin and was prepared for the Benedictine order as a teaching tool. It was one of several editions used by scholars in the early seven teenth century to produce the King James version of the Bible. The research will include study at several libraries in cluding that of the British museum in London, England, which has in its collections significant relevant materials. Among these are the only other two copies of this volume known to exist. Marks hopet> to prove this edition had more influence in the production - of the King James version than has previously been suspected. A National Highway Traffic Safety administration report estimates that 200,000 lives have been saved since the Safety Act of 1966, which began the chain of safety im provements in our passenger cars.
