Now this sort of thing happens occasionally on all of our ski slopes during the winter, but when Doc limped into the house in the middle of the summer and started bragging about his skiing exploits, I iust had to ask a few questions. "Got it in Bariloche," he bragged That explained the situation, of course. When our Rocky Mountain slopes are covered with wild flow­ ers and mushroom hunters, the Argentine Andes are blanketed with snow and the winter sports season h in full swing. If you're unfamiliar with Barilo­ che, it's a beautiful little alpine city nestled on the shore of lake Nahuel Haupi in the western part of the country. Although a long way from the capital qty of Buenos Aires, this resort community can be reached by a pleasant two-hour flight on Austral Airlines, which offers daily flights back and forth across the country. Hotels and shops are of chalet-type construc­ tion and so are the A-frame homes clustered around the lake. Here are no high-rise condos, no chunks of steel and concrete littering the land­ scape. As a result, Bariloche never fails to awe the first-time visitor It's a delightful place to stay whether you ski or not. But, most of the winter (our summer) visitors do come to enjoy the snow. Here, they find 12 miles of prepared slopes offering a chal­ lenge for beginner to advanced in­ termediate. ski-chairs, ski-lifts, rope-tows, and a cable car. If my memory serves me right, these lift facilities have a capacity of 6000 people per hour. Hundreds of fine restaurants are available in the area. They special ize in broiled trout fresh from the lake, tender thick steaks, and a wide variety of fine wines from Argentina's famed vineyards fur­ ther north. Accommodations are plentiful, also. You can stay in the ski huts at the foot of the runs, at the Cathedral Hotel in the same location, or in a host of other hotels in the area. The Bariloche slopes lie between 3400 feet and 6800 feet so they pose no altitude problems for partici pants. The skiing season lasts from late June to mid-September During this period, skiers from all over the world flock there to have fun or practice their skills. There is a Snow Festival in August which is one of Argentina's principal attrac tions. To obtain current prices I checked with my friends at BranitT and found that there are a variety of week-long packages priced from $265 for experts and $295 for begin­ ners. These prices include air fare from Buenos Aires, hotel accom­ modations. all meals, use of skiing facilities, and daily transfers to and from the slopes.
