Breath Of Life Drive Legal Notice Will Open September 17 OF McHENfcY, ILLINOIS The Cystic Fibrosis Breath of Life campaign, an annual appeal for funds to help children with cystic fibrosis and other lung-damaging diseases, begins in northern Illinois Sept. 17, according to the Northern Illinois chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis foundation. "The Breath of Life cam paign raises vital funds for research to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. It also supports clinical care and education programs which lengthen the lives of all children who struggle to breathe with life- threatening pulmonary diseases," states Steven L. Schwieger, president of the Northern Illinois chapter. Contributions collected in northern Illinois from Sept. 17 through Sept. 24 will help millions of American children like: - Johnny, a two-year-old recently diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, who is now receiving the comprehensive treatment that gives him a 50 percent chance of living past age 18; - Susan, a twenty-year-old young adult with cystic fibrosis who hopes research will find a cure in her lifetime - because her time is running out; - Tammy, a nine-year-old with asthma so severe that her lungs are crippled by constant respiratory infections, and - David, a ten-year-old who has been hospitalized with pneumonia three times in the last year. "TTiese children and young adults will require specialized pulmonary care for many years. For those with cystic fibrosis, it will be needed all of their lives," says Schwieger who explains that cystic fibrosis is the most serious of all lung-damaging diseases. Inherited by one in every 1,600 American children, this severe lung-damaging and digestive disease is presently incurable. "We're asking residents of northern Illinois to give as generously as they can when a volunteer Breath of Life marcher comes to their door," says Schwieger. "Through contributions to this campaign we will see a day in which lung- damaging diseases, including cystic fibrosis, no longer take more children's lives than any other disease except cancer." The primary purpose of the Cystic Fibrosis foundation is to support research for a cure or control for cystic fibrosis, and specialized clinical care for individuals with CF and other related respiratory and digestive diseases.
