While different kinds of treatment attract different clients--heroin addicts often prefer to use methadone, and abusers of other drugs favor drug-free programs -- studies have shown that all three methods are effective in re ducing drug use and crime and increasing employment A recent survey of clients 4 years after treatment shows that while some drug abusers will rapidly change lifestyles after treatment, most change their lifestyles gradually after several treatment episodes One stedy of more than 1,000 former heroin abusers 5 years after treatment found that, compared to pre-treatment activity, daily heroin use was down by 94 pcrcent, criminal activity was down 70 percent, and employment was up by 14 percent. Drug abuse treatment typi cally includes many backup services such as health care and employment counseling Some treatment centers spe cialise in providing services for particular groups such as youth, women, blacks, Asian and Hispanic Americans The average time in treat ment ranges from 3 months in residential programs to about 6 months for drug-free outpatient programs, and 10 months for outpatient metha done maintenance programs The average cost for treating one person for 1 year is S2.000 The total cost of drug abuse treatment in the United States is about S300 million per year Of this, $200 million comes from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the re mainder from State, private, and other Federal sources such as the Veterans Admin istration. On any day, approximately 235,000 people are in treat ment for drug abuse; 126,000 of these for heroin. Treatment programs in local communities can be lo cated by looking in the yellow pages of the telephone book under "Drug Abuse."
