iisssssawv tt; SERVICE NEWS NATO Exercises For Youths Navy Ensign John M. Sea ton and Navy Fireman Leslie M. Sharp are participating in the major NATO exercises "Bold (!uard '78" and "Northern Wedding '78" in northern Europe. Seaton is the son of Donald E. and Patricia A. Seaton of 3804 W. Grove avenue, McHenry. Sharp is the son of Louis M. and Carol J. Sharp of 3519 Highland drive. Island Lake., Seaton is the legal officer of the amphibious assault ship USS Guadalcanal, homeported in Norfolk, Va. Sharp is assigned to the tank landing ship USS Sumter, homeported at Little Creek Amphibious base, Norfolk "Bold Guard '78" and "Northern Wedding '78" are designed to refine coordination, command and control capabilities in the external reinforcement of NATO's northern flank and in con­ ducting combined land operations. Taking place over wide areas of the eastern Atlantic, North Sea and English channel, maneuvers will in­ clude amphibious landings in the Shetland Islands and southern Norway. A large scale landing on the west coast of Denmark's Jutland peninsula will be followed by an overland movement of the combined allied forces for large scale maneuvers in Germany. Participants number ap­ proximately 40,000 men, 170 ships and submarines and 800 Graduates With Honors Airman William S. Hegner, whose parents are Mr and Mrs. Frank Hegner of 209 N. Wooded drive, McHenry, has graduated with honors at Chanute AFB, 111., from the U.S. Air Force technical training course for missile mechanics. Airman Hegner learned to maintain missiles and related support equipment and will serve at Minot AFB. N.D., with a unit of the Strategic Air command. Completion of the course earned the indivioual credits towards an associate in applied science degree through the Community college of the Air Force. The airman is a 1975 graduate of McHenry Com­ munity high school. His wife, Cindy, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell of 2205 Mill lane, McHenry Partenheimer Completes West Point Cadet Basic Jeffrey S Partenheimer, son of Mr and Mrs Elvin J Partenheimer, 4202 W. Crestwood, McHenry, com­ pleted cadet basic training at the U.S. Military academy. West Point, N Y Formerly called "New Cadet Barracks" or "Beast Barracks," it is an intense eight weeks in which new cadets learn the demanding standards of military courtesy, personal appearance, and physical fitness expected of a cadet A 1978 graduate of McHenry high school. Partenheimer received a Congressional ap­ pointment to the academy aircraft from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. This represents the largest, combined NATO exercises ever held in northern Europe. Planners for "Bold Guard" and "Northern Wedding "78" include General Alexander M. Haig, Jr., USA, supreme allied commander, Europe; Admiral Isaac c. Kidd, Jr., USN, supreme allied commander, Atlantic; and Royal Navy Admiral Sir Henry Leach, allied commander-in-chief, Channel Sharp joined the Navy in September, 1976. NUCLEAR WASTE DISPOSAL Testifying before local government affairs hearings on nuclear and industrial wastes in Chicago on on Aug. 24, Illinois attorney General William J. Scott urged legislators to "Keep Illinois from becoming the nation's dumping ground for deadly wastes..." He recommended the passage of nineteen proposed laws regulating storage, transportation and disposal of deadly chemical wastes and drafting of an ad­ ditional law to require the producers and transporters of the chemicals to tell what the materials are, how much there is. and what the antidote is in case of an accident Scott also asked the lawmakers to join him in efforts to force the federal government to establish a national disposal policy on nuclear wastes. The Governor, during the last week in August, signed legislation (H.B. 2691) that will provide up to $6 million for use In keeping the elderly and some others in their home en­ vironments and out of in­ stitutions as long as possible. The new law provides help in defraying the cost of the ser­ vices needed to keep an elderly person at home instead of being placed in nursing homes or other institutions. Cost of the program for fiscal year 1979 is estimated at less than $6 million but the full amount will be available if needed Ef­ fective date of the bill is Jan 1, 1979.
