SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 5 -FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15.1978 To Follow Coach Chuck Cuda's golf team posted an enviable record in 1977. highlighted by a third place finish in the state tournament. The golfing Warriors of last year won the North Suburban conference, won the Crown invitational and took third in the district tournament. The third place win in the district earned them a berth in the sectional tournament, where they again placed third. The high finish in the sectionals earned them a trip downstate, where they wound up third. "This year, we don't have the depth ... yet," said Cuda, when questioned about a possible return to the state tournament this year. "It is a hit and miss thing., but we do have the possibilities." Those "possibilities" are headed up by seniors Pat Becker and Steve Kivley. Both Becker and Kivley were among the top six golfers on last year's team. and both played in the state tournament. Dave Schwartz and Bill Lang are two other seniors who Cuda figures to play in the top six during the season. Juniors A1 Ekeroth, Butch Pintozzi, Terry Remke and Joe Bellich will also see plenty of varsity competition during the season Twenty-eight boys tried out for the team, and Cuda will reduce that number to 20. The team is scheduled to play 16 matches and will compete in two invitational meets. Sept 23 at Crown and Oct. 7 at Lake Forest. The Fox Valley conference meet is slated for Oct. 10 at McHenry and the state tournament will begin with district play on Oct. 12. "The boys have to put it together at the right time," according to Cuda "I have several boys who are very capable of shooting very good " Cuda sees Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove as the toughest competition for McHenry in the Fox Valley. "Both of those teams will be good and Dundee could possibly be near the top." he said. Field Hockey Aims For State Tourney Boasting the best won-lost record for any girls sport in McHenry, Coach Cis Morner is gearing her team for a possible state tournament berth this year. "This is my smartest team in 8 years," she said, "they pick things up very quickly." Sixteen girls are on the team, seven of which played last year. Sharon Smith is the only senior on the team. Other returnees include Terri Bohlman, Colleen Byrne, Chris Connell, Sue Haddick, Kathy Bitterman and Jill Wohnrade. "We are getting excellent leadership on the team from Chris Connell and Sue Haddick," said Coach Morner. Both girls attended a field hockey camp this summer in Michigan, where they were learned more about the game from instructors from England and the U. S. Connell is a junior, while Haddick is only a sophomore. "For the first time since I've coached here," said Morner. "there isn't an East vs. West campus clash on the team Having a girl from each campus good enough to be a team leader has built very strong team unity." In field hockey, every game is just a tune up for the state tournament, which begins the end of October. "This year, I am able to concentrate on teaching strategy rather than skills, because this team has good game sense," according to Morner "The two girls who attended the camp help the other girls with the fundamentals I feel more like a coach this year, rather than a P.E. teacher." Being the most successful girls sport in the school, is not enough for the field hockey team. "All our games are rehearsels for the state tournament," indicated Morner "These girls are good enough to qualify for the state, if they work at it The talent is there." and has worked hard to improve herself for this year," according to Gray. "She did alot of running and conditioning work during the summer," he added, "and entered many summer tournaments. She is very dedicated and a good example for the other girls on the team " Seniors, Mary Beth Adams , Carol Letz and Molly McGowan join Hutchinson on the team and junior Meg Adams is the other upperclassman on the squad Sue Dixon and Kathy Sabatka are the only sophomores on this year's team, while there are eight freshman. "We have a super group of freshman," Gray said. "If they stick with it the program will really develop in the next few years. Freshman girls include Chris Knox. Melissa Dowe, Kerry Kraus, Jenny Prust, Julie Allen, Lisa Taylor, Kelly Coats and Tracy Burgess The tennis season opened Sept. 7, and continues throughout September and October, with the conference championships slated for Oct. 13-14 at Dundee and the state district tournament beginning Oct 20 During the season, in addition to regularly scheduled matches, the girls will compete in the Dundee Invitational and host the McHenry Invitational. Saturday, Sept 30 In GirVs Tennis-"The Potential Is There" Coach Gary Gray is very optimistic about the chances of the girls tennis team at McHenry this year "The potential is there," said Gray, who is in his first year of coaching the girls team at the school. He has been the boys coach in previous springs. "We have 20 girls out for the varsity and frosh-soph teams, and we could be a suprise," he noted In the past, girls tennis has not enjoyed much success at McHenry, but according to Gray, times are changing "We could go over the 500 mark this fall," he said, "and win at least half of our matches," a feat that has not been done by the girls team "We are starting the program from the bottom up," said Gray "We have girls through the fifth grade in our summer program," he explained, "and five of the freshman on this year's team come from our summer program And there have been others in the past." Junior Sue Hutchinson will be the number one player on this year's team "Sue played on both levels last year, Senior Pat Becker is one of two returnees from last year's McHenry golf team which took third in the state tournament. Becker and senior Steve Kively are the only players returning from last year's team.
