"We want to get a brand new school off to the right start!" So Johnsburg high school head football' coach Mike Heimerdinger realizes the importance of the first season of football at the new school. "These players can build the spirit at this school," said the former Grant assistant coach. "They have to take pride in Johnsburg high." he added, "and they are beginning to do so." It must be a hard task for Heimerdinger to build that spirit he sees as being so important. Johnsburg's playing field isn't ready (the three home games will be played at McCracken field), there are no showers or lockers ready yet, and the team practices a couple of miles down the road from the school. But in spite of these adversities, the football program has gotten off on the right foot, before the first game is even played "I'm very pleased and suprised with the turnout of boys on the three levels." said the coach. "My goal was 75, but we now have 89 players on the three teams." There are 35 players on the varsity squad, 24 on the sophomore team, and a total of 30 on the freshman team Johnsburg will only play an eight- game schedule, with their first game scheduled for Sept 16 against Gray slake. \ It gives them an extra week to prepare and following the game against Grayslake, they open their season in the always tough SHARK conference against Hononegah at McCracken field. "The veer is tough to learn, but Mike and the other backs have caught on very fast," he explained "There are intelligent players." Brian Roberts, Bill Hovseth, Rich Backs and Mike Ahlert will all carry the ball during the season for the Skyhawks "All four are strong and quick for their size." says the coach, "and that is perfect for the veer." Two of the four will be played at wide receiver when not in the backfield. and will join tight end Don Bentz to form the receiving corp. Bentz is the biggest player on the team, at 6'6", 240 pounds The interior of the offensive line will be manned by tackles John Olsson and Gary Parsons Doug Free should start at center, and Dana Andrews, a transfer from Marian will be at one guard, while Steve Lingemann will open at the other guard "Defensively, we'll play a 5-2," Heimerdinger said, "but were not set yet. as to who will play where " "We want to platoon as much as possible," he continued, "so we are experimenting with alot of people." "All our matches will be played at the oppositions schools courts," said coach Connie Sanders, "until our courts our ready " New courts are being constructed behind the high school, and may possibly be ready by Oct. 1. according to athletic director Jim Meyers, but that may be pushing it By October 1, the team will have already played eight of its scheduled thirteen matches, with only two matches scheduled to be played in Johnbsurg after Oct. 1 "It's been a real hindrance," added the coach, "not having our ow n courts " She explained that every day, the team has to be bussed to the City of McHenry courts behind the old Admiral plant for practice. "But the girls are still really enthused," said Ms. Sanders, "and we are very hopeful of having a very good first season." The team does not participate in conference competition or any tournaments, so the whole season is geared toward the state district tournament at the end of October "We have several good players on the team, including some good players who were on the McHenry team last year," she said, "including our number one and two singles players " Senior Kristi Stanell is listed as the number one singles player, while Lisa Jacji^on is close behind and will probably play number two Seniors Karen Szumlas and Darelene Mann also played at McHenry last year The number one doubles team will probably be Mann and Sheila Warner Ms. Warner is a foreign exchange student from Rhodesia. "We have very good enthusiasm and potential on the frosh soph level." said Ms Sanders "We don't have real good depth this year," she added.
