SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLA1NDEALER - PAGE 10 -FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 15,1978 Inexperience Hampers Girls Volleyball Team A freshman girl is silhoueted as attempts to set up a teammate for a spike during practice last week of the Johnsburg high school girls volleyball team. The girls team is practicing at James Bush school, until facilities at the high school are completed. Best Wishes For The 78 Season! Ace Hardware 3729 W. Elm St. McHenry 385-0722 Two senior girls and a sophomore are the only members of the girls varsity volleyball team at Johnsburg with any prior high school volleyball experience. Coach Carol Rickert knows that this presents a problem. "Everyone knows this will be a hard season for us on the varsity level," she explained. "We are just too inexperienced. Seniors Jackie Wolf and Rocky Rieck are the only upperclassmen on the squad with any prior high school experience. "Both are trying hard and must provide leadership for the team," Rickert explained. The coach just brought up Inge Dschida from the JV team to help bolster the varsity team. "Inge is only a sophomore," she said, "but she is a very fine player and is ready to compete on the varsity level." The remainder of the varsity squad is all juniors. Vicki Lord, Liz Stoffel, Lorel Peterson, Sheryl Allen, Becky Schaller, Dawn Bentz and Linda Schaeffer make up the rest of tho team. "The girls are working a lot with each other," according to Rickert, "trying to overcome the problems associated with not having played together before." "We are working hard at developing the bump-set-spike pattern on the team. The girls need to learn how to set each other up," she said. Rickert did say however, that while this year may be a struggle on the varsity level, there is promise for next year "There is much more interest and potential on the lower level," she said. "By next year, the program will have really developed." The freshman and sophomores on the junior varsity team are coached by Kris Simons "The girls are really looking forward to the start of the season," Rickert added "There is real good team spirit." "Knowing it will be a hard season, we will just play 100 percent to the best of our ability and see what happens," the coach said "My only concern is with keeping the good team spirit that is now present," she added, "if we have trouble winning our matches V Two girls try for the ball as two other girls await its return as the Johnsburg high school Skyhawk girls volleyball team practices. "It will be a hard season for us, because we are inexperienced," said coach Carol Rickert. The ball falls to the ground before a member of the Johnsburg girls volleyball varsity team can reach it, as another girl stands helplessly by. Onlu two seniors and a sophomore have any high school volleyball experience, a problem that hampers coach Carol Rickett's team. X>; MBBiiiilSiPWHl !'X\ aaoaa 8S !•» w! There are no seniors on the squad and only one junior, so the team is heavily ladened with underclassmen. "The team is very green," said Kies, "and has alot to learn. But I am very pleased with the progress of several of the kids." The team will compete on the varsity level and also have a frosh-soph team. They are practicing at Chapel Hill Country club, where they will play their home matches "John Bolton (club pro at Chapel Hill) has been great with the kids and has really helped them alot." said Kies "Junior Bill Uttich has showed some promise in the practice rounds and will probably play number one," said the coach "Freshman Tom Peiper has also showed promise," he added. Peiper will probably begin the season as the number two player According to Kies, there will be a fight for the remainder of the varsity positions Three sophomores on the team all have a chance of playing in the varsity matches; Frank Jakubicek, Todd Hatch and Gary Guetzloff In addition to Peiper, there are six other freshman out for the team: Jeff Bartmann, Dooley Stanell, Dan Nett, Rich Kretzschmer, Kevin Sowiak and Tom Young. "I really like the looks of the program," said Keis, when questioned concerning the future of the Skyhawk golf program "I like what I've seen so far." "If the kids work at it," he explained, "in four years, we will have an excellent team." YOU'LL BE GREAT IN '78! GIES SHOES 1307 RIVERSIDE DR. McHENRY PRO-Keds QconVERSE 60 TEAMS, 60!
