"Although we don't have alot of numbers, I am very encouraged with the runners already on the team," said Johnsburg's first cross country coach Senior Jim Smith, who was one of the top runners on McHenry high's cross country team last year, is the top runner for Texidor's harriers this year. "Jim is a fine runner and will be able to hold his own with any other team's number one runner." he said Behind Smith, Texidor believes he already has runners capable of forming a good team running pack. Seniors Tom Schoenig and John Schmidt and junior Jim Flood round out the upperclassmen on the team "Tom and Jim are running real well behind Smith," said Texidor, "and are the strength of the rest of the pack." Texidor is looking for Wayne Besserud who ran for McHenry last year and is coming out for the team late, to really help the team and possibly move into the number two spot on the team Underclassman on the team already, include sophomores Dan Wells, Kick Jensen and Bob Baker and freshman Erie Johnson, Mike Steck and Alan Cardella. Girls on the team are Shelly Von Brueuchenheim and Becky Bamberg The team has been practicing at the junior high in Johnsburg and w ill either run its matches at the junior high or at a new course being planned at the high school "Some of the sophomores are looking real good," Texidor indicated, "while most of the freshmen have a ways to go before they are in good shape," explaining that because it is their first year out, they aren't used to the conditioning. "1 expect to recruit more runners after school starts so that we will be able to field a full team on the varsity and on the frosh-soph level," Texidor added "The whole team is already highly motivated, waiting for our first match against McHenry," tha coach said "We could meet them four times this year, and the kids want to beat them each time. The natural rivalry makes it easy for the team to stay motivated," the coach said. "Right now the team is really excited, and so am I," said Texidor "We can't wait for the season to start." The following weekend, Johnsburg opens its Shark conference football season at McCracken field with a game against Hononegah.
