SUPPLEMENT TO MrHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 15 -FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 15. 1»78 Marian Must Execute To Win Marian Central roster A varsity ball carrier is smothered by the defense as Marian prepares for the opening of its football season. A new head coach. Lew Miskowicz, took over the reins of the football program at Marian this year. "We must execute properly if we expect to do well this year," said Miskowicz. Marian opened their season Sept. 8 against Woodstock and plays Marengo Sept. 16, before starting conference play the following week. "If we execute, we will be in good shape." said Marian head football coach Lew Miskowicz when summing up his team's prospects for this year. "Our offense will only have nine basic plays and we are going to execute the hell out of them." he explained. "If we execute properly, they other team won't be able to stop the play." This will be the first year as head coach for the 26 year-old former Norte Dame player He took over the job just a week before practice, so it hasn't been an easy job at the beginning. "We've already come a long way." he said "And Mark (assistant coach Mark Vitali) and I have the system down now." Making the job a little easier for Miskowicz. was a backfield which returned three starters from last year Halfback Mike Wenzel heads the list of returnees Wenzel was an all- conference and all-area player last year, when he rushed for 905 yards Joining Wenzel in the backfield will be fullback Ed Sandell and wingback Kurt Parker The three give the Hurricanes good offensive speed and strength Sandell is from Spring Grove Senior Bill Banker, another returning letterman will start at quarterback, which Miskowicz figures to be a very important key to this year's attack "We can.pass block," he explained "so we will have to pass block effectively Banker is a good enough quarterback to keep the other team honest." "We have worked hard this fall at throwing the ball, because we feel we can run the ball," he said The Hurricanes will use a basic tight-T offense, with two tight ends and a wingback Other returning lettermen include center Willard Pierce from McHenry; linemen Chris Pollock from McHenry, Paul Verrier, Marty Hendel from McHenry, Steve Rankin from Richmond, Greg Lilla from Spring Grove. 250 lb. Tom O'Neill, the team's biggest player; end Jay Huemann from Johnsburg and running back Bill Corcoran. Tom Balchunas from McHenry is the backup quarterback and will start defensively at halfback in the Hurricaine 5-2 defense "Our kids have shown day to day improvement," Miskowicz said. "I'm very pleased with how far we've come." One problem facing Marian is the lack of depth. Only 34 players are on the varsity team "We don't have alot of depth," explained the coach. "We are going to be forced to play alot of player both ways But we still want one-way players The more we can find the better " Besides Vitali, Miskowicz is assisted by Karl Mathews On the sophomore level. Herb Bnn is the head coach and he is assisted by Bob Bowman There are approximately 30 players out for the Hurricanes sophomore team The freshman head coach is Kerry Muldowney and he is assisted by Mik'e McCarthey Approximately 35 boys make up the freshman squad Marian opened their season Sept H against perennial powerhouse and neighbor Woodstock. On Sept 16. they play Marengo at home, in another game featuring one of the area's stronger teams. After the two non-conference games, Marian starts play in the West Suburban Catholic conference with a game against Marmion Sept. 23 Miskowicz views two teams as being the best in the West Suburban "Benet has been a good team in recent years," he said, "and Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst has had good teams recently They are probably two of the toughest league teams we will face." Last year, Marian finished 3 and 6 overall All three of their wins were in conference games. They lost four in the conference Jim Dieterle, b 5'8" 140 sr. Kurt Parker, wb 5'11" 160 sr.
