"1 wonder what we did with our summer wages0" AS IT WAS AND HOW IT IS THFN-- A Thistle Commissioner drove through the countryside and ordered land owners or tenants to cut the thistles or expect a fine NOW The weed grows w ild and has become a flower to be sprayed and preserved THHN You could grind your own coffee in a grocery store 'fine, medium or coarse» to suit your taste The storekeeper would pour it in a bag. tie a string around it and charge you mavbe 50 cents a pound „ - NOW We buy it in 2 pound metal cans, sealed for freshness, and pay the cashier upwards of six dollars including tax THEN There were plenty of hitching posts along the streets to tie up Old Dobbin or your milk wagon team NOW Large parking lots are provided but you have to circle around a couple of times to get lucky and find a space THEN A few months ago. after a long cold winter we vowed that if summer ever arrived there would be no complaints about the heat NOW We complain about the hot weather, but try to cover up with the old gag "It isn't the heat - it's the humidity". THEN-- We used to catch a cold. NOW- A virus catches us. THEN- We never heard a siren in McHenry NOW-- We go to bed hearing one kind of blast and wake up with another kind piercing the air. THEN- We had to be driving down hill with a strong tail wind to get a car up to 55 miles per hour NOW- We have to touch the brakes occasionally to bring a modern car down to the nationwide 55 speed limit. THEN- Babe Ruth signed a contract that paid him $80,000 a year to play baseball for the Yankees and the sports world thought the figure would be tops for all time NOW-- The Babe's salary would be peanuts to less talented members of the so called "Millionaires' Gub".
