Announce DAR Essay Contest All intermediate and junior high school students and their instructors should be alerted to the fact that the Kishwaukee Trail chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is again sponsoring an American History Essay Contest Parents, too are asked to interest their children in participating Last year, several McHenry county schools used the essay contest as a class project, but there were many individual entries as well This year's subject is "Travel in the Thirteen Colonies" The essay should depict the various ways in which the colonists traveled and the hazards they en­ countered Students in the fifth, sixth. seventh and eighth grades in public, private, and parochial schools may compete. The essays must be written in ink The name of the contestant , full home address, school, and grade, and the name of spon­ soring chapter must be written on the essay The essays will be judged on historical accuracy, adherence to the subject, originality, interest, neatness, spelling, and punctuation The fifth and sixth grade entries should have no less than :t00 words nor more than 600 The seventh and eighth should have between 600, and 1,000 words Students should note the number of words at the end of their essay Dates count as one word. A bibliography of books, pamphlets, letters or other research materials must be included Since many elementary students are not introduced to research papers and bibliographies until they reach high school, most children will have to have help in preparing their bibliography. Each winner on the four levels will receive a medal. All who participate will receive certificates of appreciation and an invitation to a tea honoring the winners.
