Not all the new lines will be exported to the United States, at least not in their introductory years. According to Georg Kacher, a Munich journalist who spe cialises in the motor vehicle industry, all the new cars will be in the showrooms by 1983. One of VW's current hits is called the Golf, popular in both diesel and conventional engine figurations, and cur rently so far behind demand that would-be buyers have to wait up to nine months for delivery. An additional Golf --with a notchback styling-- will be the first of VW's nine new models. Kacher says it will be marketed as the Hummel, which means "bum blebee." Following on its heels will be a new design for the Polo, the smallest car in the VW family. A rede signed Scirocco is slated for 1981. All of the new Volks wagens will have a family resemblance. Squared off headlights will replace round ones, with the lights wrap ping around to the side of the car. The general look will be rounder, with bigger bumpers and fewer hard edges. At least some of the bumpers will be completely coated in vinyl, giving the cars a blacker overall impres sion. After the redesigns meet the public, VW may unveil a real luxury car. It would be part of the Audi line, but may be distinguished from the lower-priced Audi's by sporting a German name: Horch. That means the same thing that "audi" does in Latin: "listen!" *** Car Supply Buys Being Monitored Uncle Sam is becoming suspicious of the way his nephews are using his credit cards to buy gasoline, tires, and other supplies for gov ernment cars. A lot of the purchases may be finding their way to bureaucrats' private vehicles, the General Services Administration sus pects. So the agency--which operates some 85,000 cars owned by various federal motor pools--is beginning to crack down. GSA says that it doesn't know what percentage of the charges toted up on govern ment-issued credit cards are not for supplies for Wash ington's cars. But it has strong evidence that there is some hanky-panky being pulled. A spot check showed, for instance, two complete sets of new tires being bought for the same car during one month. Some credit cards reported as lost continued to be used, and some gasoline purchases far outstripped the normal consumption of the cars involved.' So in June GSA began to install a new computerized monitoring system, that will automatically tally all the purchases assigned to each car. "Suspicious purchase patterns will be referred to the Office of Investigations," GSA head Jay Solomon as sures the taxpayers. ••• V • American Game Volleyball was first played in the United States in 1895.
