Mike Nelson, Woodstock full back, is all they said. Whether they can compare him with the departed Dave Mohapp is another matter. Mohapp happened to be Wisconsin's leading ground gainer against Oregon last Saturday, and he is only a freshmen at the Badger school. There is no doubt that if Nelson had played in the Crystal Lake game that the Streaks would have come out a winner. Tonight is another story, and the Warriors are ready for the Card homecoming. Again we must congratulate Sue Hutchinson on another fine performance on the tennis courts. The young junior was the Number One singles champ at the Warrior Invitational last Saturday in a field of eight schools. Her dad and I have issued her a challenge, provided she spots us five games in a six game set. If you don't think high school football is a crazy game, reed on. Stevenson High School defeated the Warriors X to 6 and were rated the 5th best team in the state in Class 4A last week Cary Grove defeated Wauconda, the Warriors defeated Cary Grove, and last Saturday Wauconda shut out Stevenson 6 to 0 1 realize that you can't compare scores, teams, etc., but it just goes to show you, that anything can happen when a bunch of 17 and 18 years old play a game of football. If you can recall years ago Slippery Rock, everyone's favorite team was 217 points better than Notre Dame's National Champs in a si miliar companion of scores. An interesting story is brewing in downs tate Collinsville. Virgil Fletcher long time coach and winner of 790 basketball games is out of a job. He has over 25 years of 20 or more wins in a season Last spring Fletcher resigned his teaching position due to the fact that he turned 65 years old. The veteran coach assumed that the School Board would hire him for two class periods a day, an I.H.S.A. rule, that every coach must teach or be responsible for two hours of work per day. All the coach asked was that he be paid for the time. The school board refused to hire him, and now the veteran coach has put out an appeal for a job to coach, at some school Of course there is a reason for Fletcher s appeal. Arthur Trout long time legend at Centralia High School has won 810 games to become the winningest coach in Illinois history. Fletcher needs just 21 victories to break that mark. I'm sure that within the next year or so, Fletcher will again be on the coaching lines. Remember in Rockford years ago, when Dolph Stanley was forced to retire at age 65 The "Silver Fox" is still coaching at Rockford Boylan Unfortunately it has caused some concern in Collinsville. People are taking sides, but the Board of Education has stuck to its guns and voted 5 to 2 not to rehire. That takes a lot of courage, when you are voting against a legend in the community. I really don't feel bad that my crystal ball was cracked last week. Marian Central upset I.C. of Elmhurst 6 to 0 to break my string. I had picked 5 winnersof the 6. As a longtime foe of I.C. I coached against them for 5 years, I am happy if they lose-very game every year I know that Marian fans feel the same way. So we will give it another trv this week. The Warriors to spoil Dundee s homecoming tonight (I promised to flunk every player in my class if they didn't win, and I almost got thrown out the window). The Streaks to defeat Crown (BobBradshaw will surely show some mercy to the Vikings). The Tigers of Bill Mack to beat Jacobs and remain the only undefeated team in the Fox Valley. Cary Grove to beat Crystal Lake South in a closer game than many predict. Harvard to beat the Skyhawks. Although the Skyhawks played a good game against North Boone last week, Harvard will be tougher Marian to win their homecomiiW over Driseoil The Canes, after that big one last week, are going to be tough the rest of the season tf*** Attention . . .
