MAIN 392-4750 The Landmark Preservation service has announced plans for a conference on community preservation to be held in Geneva, 111., Saturday. Oct. 28. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference will meet in the Kane county Government center at 719 South Batavia avenue, Geneva. The Government center is housed in the former Sacred Heart seminary, an art deco building of the 1930 s surrounded by many acres of forest preserve land. It is a good example of "adaptive use". The speakers.^ who are professionals and experts on various aspects of preser vation, will discuss such topics as the laws and local ordinances that encourage preservation, guidelines for restoration, the use of suneys as tools for preservation, the economics of preservation, and methods for determining that which is worth preserving. Mayors, city councilmen, city managers, and real estate agents and developers will be invited to join local preser vation advocates in learning about the benefits accruing to c o m m u n i t i e s t h r o u g h preservation. This is the fifth and final conference in a series of s t a t e w i d e c o n f e r e n c e s presented by the Landmarks Preservation service and is funded by a grant from the Illinois Humanities council The Landmarks Preservation service, a non-profit organization with members and projects throughout Illinois, works to preserve historically and architecturally significant structures in the state. Those interested in the conference, should call Carolyn Johnson at Landmarks Preservation service. 312 922- 1742. ^ So It Is The age of discretion is when you learn that nothing is as important as you once thought it was. -Star, Minneapolis. Did you k*ow that lightning kills more chiltren and adults each year than hurricanes and tornadoes combined? \ To protect yourself when lightning is near: -Seek shelter in a house, large building or hard-topped car before the rain begins. Since lightning jumps as well as strikes, a rapid build-up of dirk- bottomed cumulonimbus cloids and a distant rumble mean danger even while the siy overhead may be clear. --If you can't get in, get dowr! Stay under a clump of trees - not a single isolated tree -- or it a ditch (bewareof flooding) Asa last resort, crouch down in the open with only your feet touching the ground --Avoid hilltops, wire fences, exposed sheds, golf carts and anything else that might conduct electricity or could fall on you If lightning strikes one of your companions, give immediate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, breathing every five seconds for adults and every three seconds for children WHO KNOWS! 1.
