ERA-RDG Realty LIT CT - m Rid Pantry Of Pests Insect pests in stored products continue to be the number one insect problem in households, but there are ways to get them out and keep them out, says Nancy Moore, University of Illinois Extension home economist. These insects feed on breakfast cereals, flour, dried fruitSjjchocolate, macaroni and other products commonly found in the kitchen or pantry. Since mo6t adult insects can fly, they can live a long way from the food they infest, Moore says, but there are things home owners can do to reduce the infestation. One way to reduce infestations is not bring home the insects. Moore suggests shoppers check food packages at the supermarket for signs of insect damage and infestation. Keep home storage areas clean by eliminating spilled foods as quickly as possible. Remove foods from their original containers and check for insects, especially if the food is to be stored for more than a month. Put the food in airtight containers of glass, metal or plastic. Dried products that are not used frequently should be stored in the refrigerator, she adds. If infested food is found, discard it. Empty the cupboards or other food storage areas and scrub or vacuum thoroughly to clean up all spills. Moore says if chemical control is required, use Baygon at 0.5 percent or pyrethrin at 0.1 percent in ready-to-use formulations to cracks and crevices in the food storage area. Do not contaminate the food, food handling surfaces and cooking and eating utensils when applying the insecticide, she cautions After the spray has dried, place new shelf paper on the shelves and replace the stored products. for any additional information, contact Nancy Moore at the McHenry county Extension office at 224 W.
