Pack according to preferred method and freeze im mediately (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health center staff This article is "Coping-Hobbies ") Hobbies in themselves cannot "cure" emotional difficulties, but for a person who has an otherwise good emotional adjustment, hobbies can provide a sense of achievement, an outlet for creativity, and a respite from less pleasant aspects of life. To be effective, hobbies must be more than something to just fill •ime, but a real interest This is very evident to many retired persons, who are told that they 'must have a hobby" to fill their time Then the activity is picked for them Small wonder that the activity means nothing to them An 83-year old man of my acquaintance recently took a woodworking course at the local community college because he wanted to build some tables He also plays softball occasionally and continues to be active in his carpet laying business Although this man is the ex ception. it is most important to note that he picks hrs hobbies, they are within his capabilities and they are meaningful to him. Gardening means nothing to him, but it obviously has a great deal of meaning to a woman whose flower beds look better than anything I have seen in Better Homes and Gardens. The flowers have provided a visible sense of accomplishment, as well as a source of beauty for others to enjoy. As is immediately evident, neither of these people really have "hobbies "; they are involved in something more than just filling time Hobbies, course, are not restricted io non-working or retired persons In fact, most people who" do lead a really satisfying and fulfilling life have been involved in such activities all of their lives. The list of meaningful activities is endless. Two considerations are important in choosing a hobby one, that it is truly satisfying to that person, and. secondly, that it is not so demanding ^physically that it must be stopped in later years.
