Prior to this play, Jimbo, the smallest player on the team, scored a touchdown, his third of the season. Although smaller than the other players, Jimbo carries big statistics. He is the leading ground gainer on the Hornets, whose 3 win, 2 loss record is good for second place, just one-half game out of first. Sunday they travel to Antioch to battle the Vikings (3-1) and a MeHenry win will move the Hornets into first place. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Johnsburg Loses Homecoming Game Many sports fans would like to sfee the instant replay used on questionable calls by officials I dunno Those replays aren't all that great. Watch them from two different angles and they come up very confusing Besides, it will take all the fun out of the game if the players have to holler at a camera. The new telephone books have been delivered and I still haven't looked to see if my name is listed. That must be a record The MCHS Homecoming is just around the corner and it always brings back memories Some of you have heard our old tales before Some later arrivals in our fair city haven't When the football field was located in back of the East Campus school building, they had the old grads register. The oldest grad received a prize So did the one who covered the most miles to get here The late Thomas A. Bolger (Class of 1902) and the late Paul Doherty (Class of 1906) were sure bets to get the oldest grad prizes Ray Page (Class of 1908) is another who comes to mind Then came a day and I was presented with a one pound box of candy for being the oldest football player in attendance The gang around me had devoured the candy before 1 could report that MeHenry High didn't even own a football in my high school days. We did play basketball in the little gym at the school now known as Landmark The players referred to it as the "box car" gym. but were up in arms when they made it into an assembly hall and told us to play basketball on the tennis court north of the building Not much of a surface on that tennis court. It was covered with fine crushed stone that would grind into you pretty good if you happened to get upended during a game. For you comparative newcomers, let me report that we played Hebron on that court one day when sleet pelted against us. No crowd Students stayed in the school and wat ched through the windows. That's when men were men -- - and maybe a little dumb. Harold Phannenstill used to try to promote a dance for the grads at Homecoming, but the school didn't show much en thusiasm for the idea Watched the Dodgers humble the mighty Yankees in the first game of the World Series in a game that gave the crowd more action than finesse on the part of either team Our friend Terry Forster came in for another relief appearance and showed he can still mow em down And to think the White Sox gave up Forster and Gossage for a couple of interim players It gives me the heebee jeebees PICKUPS A wife defending her husband when somebody tried to cast unchristian-like reflections on his behavior "He's too fine.
