Prospero may seem eccentric to prefer reading his favorite volumes to enjoying the riches of a Duke's life, but many of our patrons understand his feelings when it comes to the satisfaction they find in settling down with a good book. " Of course, the modern library offers more than ever before and does not stop at providing you with best sellers and reference material. You don't have to be a bookaholic to enjoy the services of our library, because we try to have a little something for everybody and a lot of something for many. The McHenry library offers an ever-growing selection of novels, short stories, best- seUers, new non-fiction and special interest books. We have, also, an especially good selection of large print books and are able to get talking books for patrons who can no longer see well enough to read. Our magazines include all the popular women's and business magazines, current events and news magazines and publications to help you figure out how to be a sharper con sumer or how to catch a speckled trout. The back issues usually cover a five-year period, so if you're looking for a particular article, recipe, photograph or bit of in formation, take advantage of our Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature to find just what you need. Even if you're not an avid reader, you may not know we have something for you music lovers. Records may be checked out just like books for two weeks at a time, and our selection of classical recor dings particularly, is excellent. Paintings, too, are available to satisfy the esthetic side of you, and those may grace your home for one month at a time. They come handsomely framed and help you to find out at no cost whatever just what type of art you like to live with. For birthday parties, family film festivals or just to pamper you film buffs, the library has educational and entertaining film strips on hand, and catalogs for slides, film strips and 8, super 8 and 16 mm films, all to be ordered through the Northern Illinois Library system headquartered in Rock- ford. OCTOBER 18,1«» comedy films or a dinner party featuring international cui&wie, then followed by some of the stunning travel films available. Of course, these films are in great demand, due to their moderate fee per reel for the 16 mm sound films, and the ab solutely free price tag on the 8 and super 8 films and slides. Like anything worthwhile, it pays to request these films well in advance of a particular date. As for the children in our community, most parents today know that sound reading habits developed at an early age. lead to a well-read, well- informed adulthood, and in our children's department we have a rich selection not only of the childhood favorites and classics, but many of the newest Caldecott and Newberry award-winning books that will be the favorites of tomorrow Even the youngest pre-schooler can find a sturdy, fairly tooth-proof book to grow on, and when a child comes to the check-out desk, eyes shining from some discovery made in a book on dancing or dinosaurs or in the saga of The Hardy Boys or Anne of Green Gables, all those nursery books with corners that have been munched on, become well worth the expense to the library For paperback fans we have the paperback corner filled with a wide array of popular material, all contributed through patrons But even if you don't like reading, music, art of children's books, maybe we can beguile you with in teresting changing displays or lectures, plant exchanges, craft workshops or special film nights All these activities and more are a part of the full- service program of your McHenry library We like to think the library image is no longer one of a musty, dusty place just ior looking up definitions, but rather it is a vital growing resource center for a vital, growing community. Give us a try, why don't you If you live within the city limits, your card is free If you live outside the city limits, your card costs the approximate amount assessed to city taxpayers r or > ,;ur fee you can get three pizzas or ten paperback books but in the long run, these t( ca<- t compare with having the world at your fingertips when you hold in it your family's library card.
