Villa Handicap Held At Awareness Day County College \5K PETER J . STUCKKY Peter J Stuckcy. associate dean of instruction for com munity services at McHenry County College, tries to tie his shoes with heavy socks on his hands during a Handicap Awareness jJay held at, the College. The socks stipulate the lack of feeling in fingers and lack of motor coordination, As a continuing effort to make the college more ac cessible to the handicapped, a Handicap Awareness Day was held last week with » .panel discussion, movies and tapes on problems faced by i han dicapped individuals.. In > ad dition faculty, stall, end students participated in ac tivities simulating various disabilities. Instructors taught classes while sitting in wheelchairs or using crutches. Others performed daily func tions using canes and walkers. "It was a valuable l$airning experience for everyone," said Howard Miller, chairman for the special day. "Not only did we learn what difficulties handicapped persons face but we also learned of architectural barriers that exist at MCC even though the College is in com pliance with federal and state laws. The duty of the task force is to examine the results of the day and continue to strive to make the buildings more barrier-free The day also made handicapped individuals aware that the College is concerned about their needs and that efforts are being made to encourage handicapped individuals to consider taking courses at the College." Miller added Plans call for this to be an annual event. Hospital Board Proposes Effort To Decrease Costs The Board of Directors of McHenry hospital has unanimously resolved to participate in the Illinois H o s p i t a l A s s o c i a t i o n ' s proposed "voluntary effort" campaign to cut hospital costs "The American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association and the Federation of American Hospitals have recognized the need to restrain the rate of increase in health care ex penditures." said LeRoy E Olsen. president of McHenry Hospital's Board of Directors. "Those organizations have agreed to develop a voluntary cost containment program and have urged each hospital to r e a s s e s s i t s o p e r a t i n g a n d capital budgets to see whether anything further can be done to reduce its budgets, consistent with sound medical practice. "At McHenry Hospital, we have been aggressively at tempting to stem the tide of rising costs through the con certed efforts of our staff and personnel." Olsen added "We enthusiastically support the cost containment committees which are being formed by our national and state professional organizations and will be happy to cooperate with them " To facilitate accurate monitoring of the hospital's cost containment, the Board of Directors also voted to provide any fiscal data requested by the Illinois State Cost Containment Committee of the Illinois Hospital Association "We ask citizens in our service area to join us in this effort." Olsen concluded "Private citizens can help conserve hospital resources by conserving their own health -- keeping physically fit, eating wisely, cutting out smoking, driving safely, having their children immunized, and following their physician's advice "After all. whether hospital bills are paid by taxes tb|^igh Medicare and Medicaid or byjl unsurance premiums,, in creasing costs eventually are paid by everyone."
