"Fantastic" was the reply -when Art and Katy Christopher were asked how they enjoyed their vacation. The folks traveled to Connecticut where they did a lot of sightseeing and visited the Ed Kane family, former residents of McHenry. The color season was just "starting when they arrived there but had reached its peak by the time they started home ! *"It was breathtaking to see the hills a mass of brilliant red and gold trees with a few evergreens interspersed for : contrast." * When traveling about the country, a person is either Agoing up or going down; level surfaces are a rarity in the ;East The folks toured Boston, Lexington and Concord and ^walked over ground where <Colonists fought the British. Spent a day at Sturbridge village in Massachusetts where <people in costume demon strated the crafts of Colonial .'days A shoe maker, tinsmith, ^blacksmith, miller, broom- maker, and so many more The women were actually baking bread and preparing the noon meal in the fireplaces -most interesting but thank goodness for our modern coveniences • Another day was spent at Mystic Seaport, Conn , on the ocean This is a restored fishing pillage complete with cob­ blestone streets (not the easiest walking, affirmed by the tired feet that night >. While here, the folks watched scenes being shot /or the movie. "Mourning Becomes Electra', which will be aired on PBS-TV. The plot takes place at the end of the Civil War Whle in Boston, the Christophers also boarded the USS Constitution (Old Iron­ sides) which is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. It was launched October 21, 1797. Also visited the homes of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Samuel Clemons (Mark Twain). Browsed through the museum in Stock- bridge displaying the works of Norman Rockwell, who makes his home in this village, although it is not advertised to the tourist Traveling back to the mid­ west. there were stops in In­ diana to visit relatives and friends Marion and Ed Kane set greetings back to their friends here in the area COLLEGE VISITOR Randy Sonnemaker spent the week-end with his grand­ parents, the John Hogans Randy is going to college in Rockford and makes an oc­ casional trip out to see his grandparents on the farm. His mom and dad, Mary and Earl, live in Oklahoma ABOUT TOWN Nellie Hepburn enjoyed a recent visit from Mrs. Alan Ainger of Hebron Mrs Ainger is the daughter of the late Ruby Shepard of our town Walt and Doris Low spent this past week-end at a family reunion, on the Thomas side, at Benttendorf. Iowa There were some regulars missing this year; but guess one can't always make all functions of this sort Pam and Dan were there from Elkhorn Pam is working on familv history; so she spent quite a bit of time with one of Doris's aunts, getting an earful of family history. Sue and John Madey, Donna, Eddie and Marcy went, as did Doris's mom and sister and part of her family from McHenry. As unual 'twas a beautiful day and the weather was great without the rain you had around here. SEWING CIRCLE Well, ladies, we hope that all of you who are able will come to the sewing circle at Katie Christopher's home on Thur­ sday, Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m this will be the last sewing meeting before the Bazaar on Saturday, Nov 11. We will try to get all items finished and priced for that day. We have a large variety of new items for the bazaar this year. We hope you will join us on a work day. and of course, we hope to see everybody on Saturday, Nov. 11. BIRTHDAYS We wish Geoffrey Son­ nemaker a happy birthday on Oct 25, and on Oct 27, J.C. Pearson. Kevin Bauer and Marie Mergl will celebrate another year. On Oct. 28, Bill Billikas will have his special day; and on Oct. 30 we find Barb Seaborg Hansen adding another year, as do Connie Hopp and Cindy Fleming on Oct 31 Happy birthday to all of you wonderful people. Oct. 13, 20 & 27, 1978) ENROLLMENT DECLINES According to a report presented last week to the State Board of Education, public school enrollment (grades K- 12) in Illinois has steadily declined since the peak enrollment period of 1971-2 Joseph M Cronin, State Superintendent of Education, said the decreasing enrollment situation in Illinois is consistent with nationwide developments Cronin attributes the Illinois loss to a decline in the number of live births and an out-of-state migration trend displayed from 1970 to 1974 SENIORS HONORED The high-point winners in the 1978 Senior Olympics, held in Springfield Sept. 15-17, were honored recently.
