Announce Statewide Child Abuse Training Program A statewide child abuse training program for law en forcement officers and social workers was announced by Director Margaret Kennedy, Department of Children and Family Services, and Director Tyrone Fahner, Department of Law Enforcement. An intensive, one-day course developed by DCFS and DLE will be offered to 3,000 law and social work personnel between this monthandOctober, 1979. At least fifty sessions will be held in thirty communities "The complex problems of child abuse and neglect demand a cooperative, coor dinated response from state and local agencies," Kennedy said. "Through this training, we hope to establish a unified approach for consistent and appropriate action." A team of DCFS and DLE instructors will conduct the classes. Some fifty people will attend each class, including ten DCFS employees, twenty DLE officers, and twenty local of ficers. Areas of emphasis will be: roles and responsibilities of DCFS personnel and law en forcement officers; common problems and cooperation between agencies; iden tification and reporting procedures, and preliminary investigation techniques. Fahner stressed that the classes will promote a better rapport among those who deal with child abuse cases. He said the sharing of regional cohtact information at the classes will also promote better com munication between agencies during emergencies and crises. "Feedback from these courses will be utilized in developing more extensive courses," Fahner said. "Planned for the fall of 1979 are 40 afld 80-hour DLE courses on criminal investigation of child abuse and neglect cases." Now that the microwave oven can be found in nearly 10% of American households and projections for the next few years approach a 30% own ership rate, food processors are starting to gear their products to the microwave cooking style. In addition, most national frozen food firms have re sponded to the boom with mi crowave cooking instructions for existing products, such as partial and complete dinners, vegetables and desserts. Because of shortened cook ing time, microwave ovens do use less electricity than con ventional electric ranges. How ever, don't be misled into thinking that microwaves are the best cooking method for every food item. Cooking with a microwave oven is only economical on a case-by-case basis. In an effort to help make it better for you, the people at Hunt-Wesson Foods offer the following guidelines for efficient microwave cooking. For example, microwave ovens should be used when reheating or cooking food in small quantities. The small er the amount of food to cook, the shorter the cooking time; hence, the less energy expended. It is not economical, how ever, to cook a complete meal in your microwave. Aside from taking a long time to cook, each food item must be cooked individually according to density. Also, the size of the microwave oven dictates the amount of food that can be cooked comfortably at one time. Frozen foods were seem ingly invented for the micro wave concept. There is no preheating involved with a microwave. Once it's turned on, it's ready to cook; there is no temperature to set. Microwaves also operate at top efficiency when cooking items in water, such as vege tables. The microwave itself, similar in many ways to the radio wave, seeks out the mois ture in the food. It creates a vibration effect within the wa ter molecule, thus generating heat within the food quickly. As a general rule, always remember to follow tested microwave recipes for the best results. An incorrect set ting can literally destroy a lot of hard work and preparation. Also, do try to keep your oven in good operating order.
