ILL 815/385-0294 By Dick Rabbitt Tomorrow afternoon the Warriors will have a chance to spoil the Crystal Lake Central's homecoming game Although it seems a big task, taking on the undefeated Tigers, it was only several years ago, when the Tiger machine was rolling along in the North Suburban until they met the Warriors at Metcalf Field in the Tigers' homecoming The un dermanned Warriors arose to the ocassion and struck down the mighty Tigers, knocking them out of the championship Coach Bill Day and his crew are hoping tomorrow that the same thing happens in Tigertown The Tigers are leading the Fox Valley with a 4 and () record and 6 and 0 season record Senior quarterback Tom Pence, and he is a good one. is the Tiger leader He has plenty of help, fullback Mike Schaefer the conference's leading scorer is a constant threat Wide and Bill Mack, the coaches son. is a fine receiver The defense is led by Todd Marunde a senior who plays linebacker at 5'10" and 165 lbs The Warriors quite disap pointed by their loss to Jacobs last weekend, have everything to gain and nothing to lose Saturday afternoon. The Warriors played a good game last week against Jacobs, but couldn't grasp the opportunity to scoie when the time was right They have shown steady improvement, if nothing more than they played the entire game last week without a penalty If they can continue to improve this week, maybe a repeat of several years ago will take place Anyway when these two old rivals meet it is always quite a ball game Tomorrow will l>e no different Water Polo Team Defeats Buffalo Grove 17 To 13 The McHenry High Water Polo team of Mike Shanahan defeated Buffalo Grove last week by the sc^re of 17 to 13 Bill Heinrich led the way. scoring 9 goals Pat Murray came up with 4 goals, Mark Costigan had 3 goals, and Dave Thornton had 1 goal Right or Wrong Gus--Your wife's diction is perfect when she talks. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD It must be great to be a Yankee. They left no doubt that they are the best as they downed the Dodgers in the sixth game of the World Series to win all the marbles. Put the pin stripes on a player and he becomes a world beater No doubt the Yankees have the players. • Some say they have the best team that money can buy. However they got them, the team is strong in all positions and had reserve strength to take over when needed. Just look at first base. The White Sox sent Jim Spencer, a great defensive player, to New York in order to give the younger LaMar Johnson and his big bat a chance to take over. Johnson couldn't cut the mustard. Spencer spent most of the year on the bench When injuries took regular first baseman Chamblis out of the lineup. Spencer took over and saved those other infielders a few errors. When the Yankee great second baseman was injured, they put rookie Doyle in his place and didn't seem to weaken the team on defense or the bat Rich Gossage <an ex-Sox pitcher, you know) was ready when needed to put out the fire. Gossage was go good this year that Sparky Lyle didn't get the usual calls to save games Now it seems only fair that the World Champions send Lyle to the White Sox where he will get plenty of action And, that Reggie Jackson' He strikes out a couple of times, then lowers the boom Another Sox player, Bucky Dent, covered himself with glory in the series. He's the one Harry Caray picked before the series to be the most valuable. Nettles never played third base for the Sox, but I wish he could. Admittedly, I was pulling for the Kansas City Royals to get into the Series. But, what am I kicking about? The American League won. (And John Busscher lost). Our editor, Adele Froehlich is vacationing this week and catching up on the calories So -- in her absence, I am taking the opportunity to report an honor she received some time ago. but was too modest to report The Marquis Who's Who Publication Board named Adele in their "Who-s Who in the Midwest". The honor is limited to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their own field of endeavor. The Plaindealer staff is proud of the honor bestowed. I simply had to tell it The Pack is Back -- and so is The Padre Dear Earl: This is for your "So I Hear". HAPPINESS Happiness does not depend on a full pocketbook, but upon a mind full of rich thoughts and a heart full of rich emotions. Happiness does not come from what we like to do. but liking what we do Happiness grows out of harmonious relationship with others, based on attitudes of good will, understanding and love. Happiness is found in little things, a babv's smile, a letter from a friend, the sound of a bird, a light in the window The master secret of Hap piness is to meet each new day with faith, al) things work together for good to them that love God. "The Padre" Its been a long time since I wrote to you, but will try and write soon again Thanks. Padre, whoever you are. * Write away, right away. HIGH REACH as Warrior girls, Christa Kaefer and Kim Coleman, attempt to blast the ball over the net. Crystal Lake won the match taking the first and third games by scores of 20-15 and 20-8. McHenry won the middle contest by a 20-13 score. The girls are looking forward to improving their 2-8 record during their remaining games. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD "r S3 On The Sidelines \ By Dick Rabbitt Although the Warriors lost their eighth straight homecoming game, they really didn't play that bad. A pass interception in the end zone snuffed out one rally, a fumble on the one yard line stopped another rally. Jacobs took advantage of the situation and hung on to win a 14 to 8 victory. TheWarriors for the first time in many a years did not have one penalty. I watched the awful team from Chicago play at Denver on Monday night and they had 14 penalties. At one time it must have been first down and 55 to go for the first down. With first down on the four the Bears elected to pass, and that was intercepted in the end zone. So before we even think to criticize our high school team, we should look to the professionals High school players play for the love of the game, the pro's for the $$$. And the Bears took a time out before the Denver fake field goal. Everyone in the T V. audience knew the Broncos would not go for a field goal from that position. That is everyone but the Bear players coaching staff. So when the next time y«u are at a J school football game, and a mistake is made by a team; remember these are just young lads, and not highly paio professionals. Vince and Lou were in the press box last Friday doing a play by play broadcast. A standing joke is that when a team marches a number of yards, Tom Parsley will say to Vern Peterson, "How many plays Vern". We had Vern all primed when this was said to say "two plays Tommy". After the Warriors marched 71 yds. in nine plays, the question came up. When Vern replied over live radio two, and the genial Tom was stumped for words if that could ever happen Of course Vern corrected himself, and Tom felt a lot better These two fellows do a splendid job, and will be at Crystal I^ike Saturday when the Warriors take on the Tigers in their homecoming battle If you can't make the game tune in to WIVS 850 on your dial The press box gang has asked me to thank Mrs. S.I H. for all that popcorn last Friday night We had enough to start a concession stand. Ken Ludwig and Bob Ludwigsen did more than their share of taking care of it They are still feeling the effects of the popcorn, but then they deserve their misery. Tomorrow Bill Hutchinson will take his Cross Country team to Cary for the first Fox Valley Conference Meet. Crystal Lake Central and Woodstock are the favorites An unusual happening occured last week in the Fox Valley Conference. Not a touchdown pass was thrown in the four games Shades of Woody Haves, and his Ohio State team Congratulations to golfer Al Ekeroth of Chuck Cuda's McHenry High golf team Al shot a 78 on Monday and Qualified for the State Finals in Springfield this weekend The Warriors finished fourth in the Rockford Sectional and did not qualify for the State Finals It was a big disappointment for Coach Cuda and his squad, but they had an outstanding season, winning fourteen and losing none, tying only one They took first place in the Crown invitational, and the Fox Valley Conference They should hang their heads high, we are all proud of their fine season. Last week the Warriors cracked my crystal ball even' though I had Marian playing St. Ed's (a real goof but what do you expect from an ex-coach). I'll have to pick the Tigers over the Warriors, Bill Mack's team is headed for the state playoffs. Woodstock to defeat Cary, you can name the score, Crystal Lake South to defeat Crown, Jacobs to beat Dundee in a good old fashioned barn burner between two real rivals For you Skyhawk fans your first win of the season and for the school over Valley Lutheran. The Sky hawks competition in Shark play, will lead to their first win Now St. Ed's to defeat Marian. They beat Marmion last week 47 to 0 and should be in fine form for the Canes" i x; •X $ I & ft American Legion Post 491 - RINGW00D ROAD, McHENRY - FISH FRY EVERY FRIDAY (5:00 • 9:00 P.M.)
