A time to put aside problems and count one's blessings. We are thankful for our 40 acres with its rolling hills, woods, and especially the creek running behind our Tiome We try not to think of the subdivisions and homes that are closing in around us. More and more people creating more traffic, more litter in the creek and along the road and more predators invading our nature haven. "In 1972. we acquired a white male gosling who grew into a smaller-than-average goose. Our neighbor had three ducks io a pen and we had a problem keeping this goose from sneaking over to visit the ducks We named the goose Silly because of this seemly strange attraction to them Whenever the ducks were out of the pen. Silly would bring them home. "Our neighbor finally gave us the ducks as they were here most of the time anyway. These domestic ducks attracted wild ones during the winter, especially at feeding time One wild mallard knew a good thing when she saw it and decided to stay permanently. She followed Silly plus three into the shed, willing to be locked up with them at night, enjoying full freedom during the day up and down the creek and in the yard, Spring came and she expressed her trust in us by starting a nest under the front steps. When the ducklings hatched, 'Silly charged over and at first we thought he would try to hurt what must have appeared to him as strange little creatures. But his only intention was of extreme protectiveness "As the years passed, any group of ducklings fortunate enough to be picked by Silly to be under his supervision, could pretty well count on reaching maturity. The mother ducks never minded his presence - they welcomed the security. Ducklings hatched out while Silly was in charge of another group, usually suffered as high as a 50 percent loss from predators or swift currents. "In rough water. Silly would lead, making smooth sailing for any little ones behind him. At night, he'd herd them together and stand guard duty, alert at the slightest sound. "Last Spring a duck started laying in a barrel set on its side for possible residence with a hinged door to enable lockup at night. She returned to the barrel for a few nights after the ducklings hatched. We stared in disbelief watching Silly trying to follow them into the barrel, then sadly realizing he was too big. "Silly would come on shore occasionally to eat grass while the ducks slept on the bank. If the ducks started swimming away without Silly noticing, it was always an amusing sight when he realized he was being left behind. His neck stretching frantically, emanating ear- shattering honks, he'd race to the water, his feet lifting wildly FULL FACTORY EQUIPMENT HOURS DAILY 9 9. "Five years of observation showed that mating was never his game • though he was the best 'father* a duckling could ask for and the best friend a duck ever had. "Last year, when the snows were so heavy. Silly and friends decided it was better for them to stay in the creek even though paths were shovelled to the shed from the water's edge. So they got out of the habit of being locked up at night. "They liked to swim under a street light at the corner by a bridge. Wednesday morning, Nov. 15, Silly did not come up with his friends for breakfast. One of the things Silly had no control over was the 'human' predator; the six-foot fellas grabbing duckings in the creek last summer - we had to help with that problem; the dude on the horse just 'passing by' whose dog just happened to kill and retrieve one of our original three ducks explained, "I couldn't stop him" - neither could Silly; the two hunters that went downstream in their canoe a few weeks ago - we told them the ducks with the white goose were ours - they told us that if any flew, they could shoot them. Now those are good sports. "A neighbor by the bridge saw a man shooting at our goose. Was this 'predator' looking for Thanksgiving dinner, so desperate that he'd shoot a tame goose out of the water after dark? Or was he just having a little target practice? Silly's white body must have stood out well under the street light. "Another Thanksgiving - we're thankful for havinj^known Silly - his respect for life and his dedication to the caring of others has enriched our lives. We pray he didn't suffer. I realize now he wasn't such a silly goose after all. One day: he has been gone and there were four less ducks this morning. Do we have to take away their freedom to save their lives? To them, life is freedom. "More and more people - if we could some way help the sick ones who don't realize what they're doing; if the thoughtless could somehow be turned into thoughtful; then we'd all have a lot to be thank ful for. "The Taming of the Shrew" is a perennial favorite of all Shakespeare's comedies, as it portrays the age-old battle between the sexes and its amorous consequences. The performance was certain to be memorable owing to the great renown of the National Players. Two members of the English faculty at Marian. John Seisser and Frank Marks, chaperoned the field trip The performance was timely for Marian students because several English classes are currently studying various aspects of Shakespearean drama Egoism is the very es sence of a noble soul. -F.
