Intention Swvict 33*3737 • 338-4747 Evergreen Needle Loss -- I have been receiving questions C«bout the heavy evergreen ^Jneedle loss In consulting Jim •sFizzell, Cook County Hor ticulturist. he shared with me these facts. Evergreens such as vPine, Spruce, Arborvitae are so named because of their habit of keeping their leaves (needles) through the winter Under normal conditions, the needles are produced in the spring and live 2 or 3 years When suf ficient new growth has taken place on the tips of the bran ches, these older needles in the center drop off, having served their purpose of photosyn- thesizing carbohydrates for the tree The normal needle drop occurs during late spring and summer and is usually not noticed because of the density of new growth hiding it. We have experienced two unusually severe winters and two droughty summers in the last two years Current season growth on affected plants is generally normal and healthy. The older, affected needles have been exposed to one and sometimes both of the severe seasons. Since disease or insect problems are not involved in most cases, we can assume the premature drop is a result of this stress. Plant owners should not be One of the Best Energy Savers of All Time! • * -- -- _ -- r a i my* SUN WORK HOLDS IN HEAT1 KEEPS OUT COLD! Make Your Own Storm Windows. Storm Doors, Porch Enclosures! While we don't know ail the factors involved, the stress on evergreens can be reduced by making sure they go into winter well watered. In exposed situations, screening to protect the plants from winter sun and winds may also be helpful. Farming And Schools - I had the opportunity to talk to the classes of Chuck Little and Fred Tessler at Woodstock high school. Larry Harris, Farm Bureau Manager; Jack Lee, Production Credit Association President; Ed Weilbacher. S.C.S. Soil Conservationist; and Jim Lucas, A.S.C.S. Director; and I talked with Chuck and Fred's Environmental Studies class. We gave the students an overview of farming here in McHenry county. They are now visiting several farms locally to talk directly with the farm owners and operators. I was pleased to see the in terest the students displayed They asked us some tough questions Agriculture Council Meets - The Extension Agriculture program council met last week. In addition, they discussed the feasibility of setting up a program to assist with Labor Management for farmers and their hired labor. Preparing The Home Orchard - - More and more of you have a few fruit trees on your lot or acreage. You can help prevent damage to your fruit trees by preparing them for winter. Remove all grass and weeds around the trunks of the trees. Unmowed vegetation provides cover for field mice which eat the inner bark of trunks and roots. Provide protection against rabbit or "wabbit" damage as I explained two weeks ago. Wrap the trunk to protect the trunk from winter sun scald. Trunk wrapping does not keep the trunk warmer, but provides shade from the winter sun which can elevate the tem peratures. The fluctuating daytime and evening tem peratures causes ice crystals to form in the inner bark, killing it Such injury usually occurs on the south or southwest side of the trunk. Remove paper wrappings when growth starts in the spring as these wrappings provide cover for insects which may injure the trunk during the growing season. Of major concern in winter survival of fruit trees is drainage. Fill low areas, so water will not stand around the tree trunks and roots during the winter months These con ditions are ideal for develop ment of disease organisms which could attack the trees at the soil line and kill them Slaff Conference -- Your County Extension Staff advisers in cluding Nancy Moore, Kathi Heberer, Craig Scheidecker, and 1 will be in Urbana next week for a state-wide staff conference Helen Kyle. Jan Sherwin. and Mike Quinto, our faithful secretarial staff, will be holding down the fort. Don't hesitate to call them Hope-Wick Applicators Recirculating sprayers can be used to apply non-selective herbicides to weeds taller than row crops, but a recently developed rope-wick herbicide applicator offers greater precision and selectivity in weed control. The rope-wick applicator was developed to apply non selective systemic herbicides either above or below the canopy of row-crop plants. The loose-woven wick conveys the herbicide to weeds that touch the wick as the tractor moves through the field. Tractor-mounted wick ap plicators using glyphosate were successful in controlling johnsongrass, sunflower and velvetleaf in soybeans under controlled conditions. The rope- wick application resulted in a 51-percent increase in soybean yield as compared to an 18- percent increase in yield from plots treated with the recir culating sprayer. The research was conducted by J.E. Dale of the Southern Weed Science Laboratory. Jim E. Dale is with the U.S. Delta States Agricultural Research center, P.O. What causes them to form? An occluded front is always formed when a cold front (which travels up to 35 m.p.h. or sometimes even faster) overtakes the slower-moving warm front. The cold air mass pushes the warm, often moist, air upward and there is a mixing process which may confuse the observer on the ground and even the professional in his forecasting office. A characteristic of an oc cluded front is heavy rain and often strong winds. Often, however, the cold front which overtakes the warm will speed up the eastward movement of weather and clearing will come sooner than had the warm front passed overhead in a normal manner.
