At the same time, prices for new homes - including single family, condominiums, townhouses and multi-family homes - were only moderately higher than they were in August j A monthly survey of 180 builder locations by the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago (HBAGC), trade association of the area's leading builders, showed that total sales of 652 new homes was a decrease of 30 percent from 948 reported in August It was the lowest one-month volume since 647 were reported in January, when the survey was initiated The survey is estimated to represent 60 percent of builder activity in the metropolitan area HBAGC president Ralph Harwood noted that the back- to-school time traditionally slows home shopping in Chicagoland "In addition, we've had th( problem for some months of finding more and more potential buyers withdrawing from the market because of rising home prices and the high cost of financing with interest rates in a strong upward spiral since spring," said Harwood. Here is a product-by-product breakdown of the September survey, reported by Harwood. Detached single-family sales decreased by 24 percent to 445 homes sold from 591 reported the previous month. July sales were 491. Traffic also slipped, dropping to 23,738 visitors from 25,191 a month earlier. The average price of new homes sold in September rose to $78,302. up 1.2 percent from $77,274 in August. That reflects an annual rate of 14.4 percent, but Harwood said this was probably high "On the basis of our survey the average price of single family homes has only in creased about 7 percent from the $73,057 reported in Janurary. Unless there is a strong turnaround in the final quarter, I think' we may see a price increase of less than 10 percent for the year, which is something we haven't seen for several years " Volume of townhomes sold has been almost identical for three consective months, with 105 sales reported in Sep tember. 107 in August and 105 in July Traffic almost matched August, with 3,158 visitors in September vs. 3.200 in August. The average townhome price was $66,723, up 0.95 percent from $66,095 in August, This increased the annual rate of price for townhomes to 11.4 percent from 9.6 percent in August. * Mid-rise condominium sales fell to their lowest level since January, with 70 sales as compared to 62 in January. This was 57 percertt less than the August volume of 163 units, which was the best production of 1978 in this category. The average price inched ahead 0.6 percent to $47,758 from $47,435 and traffic fell back to 1,123 from 1,747 reported in August Multi-family and multiplex sales totaled 32 units, a sharp decline from August's 82 sales this was a 61 percent decrease Traffic lost 26 percent to 863 from 1.164 visitors in August. The average price was up 0.7 percent to $47,302 from $46,927 a month earlier ISSUE CH ARTER A charter has been issued by the state to Empire Electric Supply Corp , McHenry A Record Delta Airlines Getting settled made simple. McHENRY, IL 385-7200 n n The Illinois State Fabricare association (ISFA), at a recent meeting in Hillside elected new officers and board members go serve for 1978-79 Members of the board of directors elected a year ago and continuing their terms through 1979 include Don Howard of Mr. Don's One Hour Cleaners, McHenry ISFA is an association of Illinois-based drycleaners, launderers. fabric producers, textile and garment manufacturers, retailers, corporate and college researchers, educators and equipment manufacturers. The association began in 1916 and for sixty-two years has served its members by providing technical and educational in formation and assistance aimed toward better fabricare for the general public. Howard also recently at tended a special seminar for drycleaners conducted by the Internationa] Fabricare In stitute (IFI) in Hillside. The seminar featured a talk on public relations by a representative of Ruder & Finn of Mid-America and a discussion on "Quality Drycleaning." led by Cal Lloyd. IFI technical director What You Need To Know If you have difficulty un derstanding nutrition label ing, you're noi alone. A recent Food and Drug Ad ministration (FDA) survey found that fewer than a third of the country's food shoppers actually know how to read labels and use the information they And there. What nutrition informa tion should you expect to find on a label? Well, nutri tion labeling should contain the amounts of calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals per serving. Most people seem to un derstand the listing of car bohydrate, fat, and calories. However, a source of confu sion appears to be the sec tion containing the percent of United States Recom mended Dietary Allowance vU.S. RDA) for vitamins, minerals, and protein. To help you understand the U.S. RDA, here are a few facts you should know: • The U.S. RDA is de fined as the daily amount of vitamins, minerals, and pro tein established by the FDA as essential for maintaining good nutrition. • Hiere are U.S. RDA's for four categories of peo ple: adults and children 4 or IF more year* of age, infants, children under 4, and preg nant and lactating women. • The U.S. RDA's stated on a particular package de pend upon which of the above population groups the food is intended for. Because of consumer con fusion, the FDA is planning to review the contents* of nutrition labels. The most controversial aspect will be whether to include more information-^or less. Some consumer advocates feel nutrition labels should list only calories, fat, and cho lesterol. Others insist that these labels should he lengthened to include all factors contributing to good nutrition. Food manufacturers will request and utilize con sumer ideas for nutrition labeling. These ideas will then be thoroughly tested for consumer understanding. 1^1 is LUNCH SPECIAL! one RC COLA, WITH 1 SANDWICH or 1 PIZZA ORDER PIZZA, 11 AM TO 4 PM M0N. THRU FRI. 3401W. ELM ST.
