Even though this is the joyous holiday season, the weather will sometimes make this a not so happy time of the year, according to state police. With the snow, sleet and sometimes freezing rain, motorists should now adjust driving habits to winter driving for it will be some time before there will be clean, dry and normal Conditions. Even though the roads may not be covered with snow or ice don't be led into a false sense of security. The conditions may appear to be o k but sometimes they could be just the opposite. When approaching in tersections. allow enough time to stop. Don't wait until the last second to apply the brakes; start applying them sooner. Also, look for an out in case of sliding either toward another vehicle or across the center line. Keep another thing in mind about intersections; after the vehicles have left, any ice or snow that may have been melted by the exhausts will now start to freeze again, causing a very dangerous situation. Approximately one-third of all accidents happen at in tersections. The roads may seem to be fine to drive on in the morning until going over a bridge or overpass to enter the ex pressway. Suddenly control of the car is lost. A large number of our motorists seem to forget that bridges and overpasses will freeze before other parts of the road. Just a frost build-up can cause serious problems to the bridges or overpasses In driving along this winter season, keep in mind that in case of going into a skid, turn into the skid not away from it. Pump brakes lightly, do not slam them on. If brakes lock, there is no control of the car. Lasf but not least, avoid tailgating other units. The best thing to do is change summer driving attitude to a winter driving attitude. Cooperation Cooperation would solve many problems. For instance, freckles would make a nice coat of tan if they'd just get together. -Tribune, Chicago. The soft shirt in new longer length is topping pants and skirts in the fashion scene. DECEMBER 6,1871 | a a a a a a a a a « a a a a a a a a a a a a a * a a « a % Keepin' i Healthy It's that time of year when most of us begin planning Christmas decorations for our homes: trees, lights, tinsel and the other traditional finery of a festive season. Sometimes, however, in our holiday mood, we overlook simple precautions that might help avert a holiday tragedy. The Illinois Department of Public Health has some advice they hope we will all keep in mind when selecting and decorating our trees. To begin with, when choosing a live Christmas tree, the first thing you should do is lift it to feel its weight. If it's good and heavy, that indicates it is full of sap and will stay fresh and moist longer. When you get the tree home, saw about one inch off the bottom of the trunk, and set the tree in water until you are ready to stand it up in the house. Sawing a piece off the trunk will expose new wood that will absorb more moisture into the tree. When you place the tree inside, be sure to use a stand into which you can put water, and be certain the tree trunk is sitting in the water. Check the tree stand every day and re-fill it as water evaporates. Now that you are ready to decorate, take a few minutes to check the condition of the tree lights, you will be using. Whether they are old Or new, your lights could be a real hazard if they have any defects. (This is true of outdoor lights, . also). To make sure your Christmas lights are in safe condition, follow this checklist: 1. Check light strings for sockets that are cracked or broken. This potential hazard can be made worse by in stalling or changing bulbs. As you remove and replace bulbs, watch for any cracks that may develop in the socket. 2. Check the end of the plug or connector for loose or missing "add on" inserts used for plugging in additional lights. If it is loose, this insert can fall out and expose hare wires If the insert does not appear to be loose, just to be sure, give the prongs or blades on the con nector a substantial push against a hard surface to simulate the effort used in plugging in the set Or. with caution, plug fhe set into a non- live current Hike an un connected extension cord) five times. The blades should not become loosened or cause the insert to push out the other end. 3. Check for exposed bare ct, wnerv insulation nas pulled back. 4. With the bulb in place, check around the socket for thin hair-like wiresf. These wires may be improperly trimmed extended lilament wires which serve I as the contact between the milb and the socket, and can present a shock hazard Replace the socket with an acceptable-one 5. Remove the bulb from the socket Then check to see You'll do better FRESH PRODUCE SALE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE HAND PICKED VALUES Quality Trimmed Meats 7 BLADE 1ST CUTS SOLD AS ROAST ONLY POTH ROAST LIMIT 3-PLEASE O You'll Do Better With A&P's FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES S Ideal For Baking-IDAHO RUSSET POTATOES POUND BAG U S.
