DECEMBER 6, 1978 Hanukkah is the festive winter celebration of the Jewish religion. It is an eight day festival that celebrates a victory of a small group of Jewish men over 2,000 years ago. In Palestine, one hundred and sixty five years before the birth of Christ, Antiochus, "the mad man", was determined to make all the people in that land stick to the Greek idol worship. The Jews rebelled under the leadership of a priest, Mattathias. One of his sons, Judas Maccabeus, led a small group which was finally successful in driving out the soldiers of Antiochus and bring-' ing peace. Judus and the Mac cabees entered the temple and found they needed oil to light the holy candelabra, the menorah They could find only a tiny con tainer of oil, but it burned for eight days For this reason, Hanukkah is called -'The Festival of Lights" In Jewish homes, Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting one of the eight candles of the menorah every night, along with a sham- mash, or "servant" candle On the eighth night, all the candles will be burning. Games are played and gifts are exchanged each night. It is traditional for children to receive little gifts of money, called Hanukkah gelt, on each of the eight-nights Families recite blessings of thanks to God for the great miracle that hap pened so long ago The word Hanukkah means dedication. The celebrants rededicate themselves to the ethical and spiritual teachings of Judaism and to the resistance of t y r a n n y a n d i m m o r a l i t y . Hanukkah is a time for personal rededication, too The most traditional food dur ing the eight day festival is LATKES, golden potato pan cakes Who's Brilliant? "Your husband looks like a brilliant man," said the new friend, "I'll bet he knows everything " "Don't be silly," said the wan dering wife, "he doesn't suspect a thing. " J V( IE SMITH There's an old aphorism that a prophet is without honor in his own country The gist of the saying is, of course, that it's difficult to be taken as an ex pert by those who know you well Perhaps, though, it's time to give a little honor to two local educators They aren't prophets, certainly, hut they are well known experts statewide, and are becoming known nationally I am referring to Ms Jacie Smith, school psychologist to McHenry high school, and Dennis Spraetz. counselor at Johnsburg high school For more than two years they have done presentations at state and national workshops and con suited with schools, hospitals and governrfitnt agencies Their topics have ranged from alcohol and drug abuse identification and referral, to various counseling strategies. Most recently, they were presenters at a national con vention in Chicago, Ms. Smith is presently holding an in- service program on alcohol abuse for the high school faculty. She has also been a prime mover in the McHenry Mental Health clinic, and was instrumental in the establish ment of the McHenry Alter native high school She has also taught an university extension course for the Chicago Con sortium of Colleges and Universities. Her colleague, Mr Spraetz, was a counselor at East campus for several years, until the Johnsburg division eliminated his position. Their level of professional expertise is becoming a regular part of the educational scene in McHenry. UBLIC SALES SERVICE, INC. AUCTION WILLIAM BEU 14505 Nelson Kd , Woodstock, 111 SAT. According to R. I . Polk & Co., which publishes street directories, "Second Street" is the most common in the country. In order, here are the seven most popular: 1. 2 . 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. You Second Street Park Street Third Street Fourth Street Fifth Street Main Street First Street might say this proof that the first are truly last, as far as street names are concerned. Lake Jackson, Texas, boasts some unique names of streets in its downtown area. The three major ones are called: 1. This Way 2. That Way 3. Anyway But the most unique name is probably the one that runs in front of a church in l ake Jackson. It's named "His Way." Actually, a fashionable address is not nearly as vital as attitude. It's not the street which people live on that counts so much as the people themselves. It's not where we live, but how. Even if one lived on Wrong Way Avenue, that name in itself would mean nothing so long as one had the Right Way Attitude within. R. J.
