I'niversity of Illinois Extension safety specialist, the main accident problem with the snow- blower is the user attempting to clear the discharge chute of clogged snow while the machine is running A recent snow blower injury survey revealed that three-fourths of the victims were cut by the auguer or by the snow blower impeller blades, notes Hogsett This same study stated that 42 percent of the accidents occurred when the victim was using the snow thrower for the first time that season And two- thirds of the injuries occurred within the first hour of snow- blower operation Mere are some safety suggestions to help you avoid snow blower accidents. Alway«<read the instruction manual and *ataLy, precautions Hirmshed w ith the snow blower Before clearing debris from the blower, making ad justments, or changing the blower's discharge chute direction, shut off the engine and disconnect the spark plug Always check the fuel level before each use to avoid refilling the engine while the machine is hot Wipe off any gasoline spills and be sure the tank cap is snug If the unit is electically powered. make sure that the blower is grounded or double insulated to avoid accidental electrical shock Before starting the engine, be sure to disengage all clut ches and check to see that all rotors, augers and impellers are free to rotate -Never place hands, feet or loose clothing near any moving part Keep guards in place -If it is necessary to operate the engine in a garage or other enclosed place, open doors and windows to provide sufficient ventilation. -Do not force the snow thrower to operate faster than the manufacturer specifies.
