Marian Volleyball Team Wins Sectional The Marian Central high school girl 's volleyball team has advanced to the super- sectionals of the Ill inois state high school association tour­ nament. The Hurricanes defeated St. Barbara of Chicago Friday. 20- 14 and 20-16 to win their sec­ tional and advance to the supersectional The Canes were lead by Joy Spengel of McHenry who was high scorer and Patti Thelen, also of McHenry, who was second high scorer A comeback from a ten point deficit highlighted Marian's win in the second game At one time, they trailed by a score of 12-2, but outscored St. Bar­ bara's 14-4 to t ie the game at 16. From there, the Hurricanes went on to score the final four points of the game to win the sectional. Tuesday> the Hurricanes travelled to Somonauk, where their opponent in the super- sectionals was conference rival Rosary high school from Aurora Marian lost i ts first match of the year to Rosary at Aurora, but avenged that defeat in the middle of the season by defeating their conference rivals at Woodstock If Marian wins the Tuesday match, the girls will qualify for the state finals, and would play Thursday morning at the Ill inois State university campus at Normal Two Marian teams qualified for the state finals earlier this fall The golf team finished eighth in the state, while the cross country team capped a suc­ cessful season with a fourth place state finish. ONE^IANDED REBOUND--Despite the efforts of Brett Zimbrick of Johnsburg, Mike Gertz of Wauconda snares a rebound with one hand during Saturday night ' s Skyhawk-Buildog game at Johnsburg. Gertz was too mush for the Skyhawks to handle, as he scored 20 points to lead his team to a 64-51 win. Friday night, the Hawks opened their Shark conference season by losing at Hononegah by two points 53-51. This weekend, Johnsburg hosts Beloit Catholic in a conference game Friday night and on Saturday night. Grant visits Johnsburg for a non-conference battle. Both games will be plaved at Johnsburg high school.
