Coach Fulton's Warriors basketball team came up with another of their thriller diller games on the home floor when they came up with a 45-44 win over Zion Benton TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 20. 1968) In a reconvened meeting of the board of Consolidated School District 15, Consultant Marvin Birchfield presented a resolution officially setting Jan. 14 as the date for an election asking money to build and equip a new junior high school building The amount, which had been set tentatively at the previous nieeting, is in the amount of $2,200,000 for a building to be erected on 21 acres located near the junction of Ringwood road and Highway 120 and to renovate Landmark school. Two million dollars is earmarked for the new school west of the city and $200,000 for the renovation which is ex­ pected to provide eight classrooms. Plans are now being made for the twenty-second annual meeting of the McHenry County Soil and Water Con­ servation district to be held Jan. 25 at the American Legion home in McHenry FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 20, 1928) The county board of super­ visors said it with ballots when they voted down investigation bills in the amount of $7,463.51. The ballot system also passed two bills amounting to $296.65. The method of voting by ballot was suggested by Supervisor Robert Haeger of Algonquin when the bills were presented for consideration The decision of the board ends a long argument over these bills. West McHenry was the scene of another big fire when the big Borden ice house burned to the ground The blaze, which started about midnight, was discovered by some of the basketball players who had just returned from the game in Woodstock. The cause of the fire is not known as the building was empty and not in use at the time. FORTY YEARS AGO (taken from the files of December 29. 1938) Last Wednesday. Dec. 21, may have been the first day of winter, but in reality it did not make its appearance until Tuesday, when it roared into McHenry and every other city and town in the county. The first belo^'^ero weather of the winter greeted loeat residents on that morning as they traveled to work after the two- day holiday. Many motorists discovered to their dismay that automobiles would not start and garage mechanics ex perienced one of the busiest days of the season McHenry as well as other cities, towns and villages of the nation, on Dec. 25 observed the birthday of the Christ Child and "Peace on earth to men of good will" became the chorus of the Christian world's most joyous holiday. The McHenry Merchants, newly organized .town basketball team, staged a free game last Friday evening, for the purpose of acquainting their team with the local basketball public The boys lost to the strong Richmond five, but need not make excuses considering that this was their first game of the season. The score was 53-43. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 22. 1953) In this Christmas season, when even the less sentimental are touched by the beauty of the meaning of the holiday, there remain a few who take delight in bringing unhappirtfess to others. Without ' doubt. McHenry and the surrounding area is more beautifully lighted and decorated this Christmas than ever before. Almost every house has at least some sign which gives evidence of the feeling of the residents for the spirit of the season. Sometime between midnight Saturday and dawn Sunday, someone kidnapped the attractive Santa on the Barbian porch rail, had slashed the stuffed Santa at the Lent home, destroyed an angel doll and made away with a wagon which were also a part of the display Last week the abstract of assessments, compiled by the McHenry county board of review, was turned over to County Clerk Raymond Woods and figures revealed that the total valuation of all assessed personal property and real estate in the county had in­ creased in 1953 over 1952 by $696,563. This is the highest valuation ever recorded in county history.
