Iream of performing in iweden. Kris ten Poirier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Poirier, McHenry, stands center stage in preparation for her dazzling solo in By The Beautiful Danube, a short classical work featured in the B.D.T. Christmas concert this year. Left to right are Jane Lynch, Crystal Lake; Betsy Faxon, Barrington; Kristen, Barbara MAnny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Manny, who moved recently from McHenry; and Jill Schaefer, McHenry. Amid all the hustle and bustle of Christmas planning and holiday festivities, next summer seems a long way off, but to a group of 30 young performers from McHenry county, the summer of 1979 has been uppermost in their minds for several months. These dancers, members of the Bicentennial Dance theatre, have been invited to perform in Sweden for three weeks next summer, as representatives of talented midwest youth. Judith Svalander, formerly of McHenry, the group's founder and artistic director, received the invitation when she was in Sweden last summer, and Per-Ake Borssenn saw photographs of the troupe. The dancer^ will stay with Swedish families, and travel throughoutiSweden, enjoying the Midsummer Festival and getting to know Scandinavian customs and lifestyles. Eight McHenry girls will be among those going on this trip: Sara Bird, Catherine Burr, Dawn Grether, Donna Hopp, Robin Irwin, Kristen Poirier, Jill Schaefer and Kimberly Schiera. To help raise the money needed to defray costs for the girls and the company's costumes and scenery, the dancers have been having bake sales, car washes, selling gingerbread houses and working as teams and individuals to raise funds. The Christmas concerts were the official kick-off of fund-raising and included many area residents who are performing for the first time with the group While only a limited number of dancers may be taken on this tour. Mrs. Svalander hopes to do more touring in the future to give local talent a chance to develop and learn the life of the performer while providing high-level entertainment to McHenry county residents. Naturally, as the company matures and grows, more and more young performers will have the opportunity to go on these tours and perhaps begin a professional career here at home, without having to go thousands of miles to find work in their chosen field of dance. This too, is a primary goal of Mrs. Svalander, in addition to providing McHenry county residents with their own company of dancers. Regional dance is one of the most booming art forms in America today, and companies are springing up everywhere. Still, it takes tremendous support to keep a company financially afloat, and if companies thrive, it gives dancers a chance to work where they choose and not where they are forced to work. The non-profit Bicentennial Dance theatre, founded by Judith Svalander and her late husband. John, in 1976, strives to give these area dancers the chance at least to see what it's like to live the struggling life of the dancer. None of the B.D.T. members are paid to perform with the company...experience is their pay, plus the invaluable opportunity to be on stage, work on choreography and learn how to work with an audience Now, with this opportunity to represent the midwest with dancers ranging in age from 10 to 17. they will bring back the irreplaceable experience of touring and being part of an international project Kim Schiera. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Schiera, McHenry, perches on a broom in a humorous character dance about a foiled romance in peasant Russia. In the foreground are left, Linda Manny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Manny, formerly of McHenry. and Sara Bird, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bird, McHenry. These three McHenry girls are among those traveling with the company to Sweden next summer if their fund-raising goals are realized. Left to right, the other members of the dance are I^aurie Beardsley, lngrid Vowels and Kim Baran, Crystal Lake; Dan Laino (holding broom), Cary; Brooke Walker and Hollie Fiedler.
