McHenry High School Athletic Program Remains Unchanged PAGE 9 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. DECEMBER 22,1»78 BILLBLANKENHORN Recently the McHenry High School Board of Education decided that, by the fall of 1980, McHenry's two campuses would each become four year high schools Since then, some fears have been expressed that this decision would force McHenry to compete as two schools These people fear that this would destroy McHenry High's ability to compete in the Fox Valley conference. According to McHenry Athletic Director, Bill Blankenhorn, however, those fears are groundless "We are under no pressure whatever from the state to compete as two separate schools." says Blankenhorn. "and I don't see any pressure coming from the IHSA for at least five years. Blankenhorn states that fielding two competitive teams is a goal to be strived for, and that when enrollment and financial resources allow it. McHenry High School will do just that. Until then. McHenry will operate one athletic program, one speech program, one drama program, etc. On The Sidelines By Dick Robbitt Jacobs is the surprise team of the Fox Valley at this time. They, along with Gary Collin's Crystal Lake South and Cary Grove, are undefeated as of this writing. Later tonight there may be some changes in the standings. Ken Slimco's Golden Eagles, who the Warriors fought to the wire are on top with three straight wins. How they ever defeated Crown last week is still a mystery to me and a lot more basketball fans. Give credit to the genial coach of the Eagles, he had them up against his old school. Coach .Pam Schafer's girls basketball team is off to a fine start. They defeated a fine Wauconda squad Monday night 61 to 57, playing without the services of Annette Dercole, their captain and all conference player. The Warriors are entered in the Belvidere Regional in the first week of March. Pairings have not been issued by the I.H.S.A. at this time, but along with the Warriors and host Belvidere are Honnenagah of Rockton and Woodstock. Although the Warriors are going through difficult times at the present, look for them to jbe tourney ready in March. Ken Ludwig is known for getting his team ready for the state playoffs. Congratulations to the Skyhawks for a fine doubleheader win over the past weekend They defeated Beloit Catholic on Friday night, and then won in overtime against Grant on Saturday night. The Warriors are entered in the Elgin Holiday Tournament to be held at Elgin High School Dec. 27 to Dec. 29th. It is not one of the better holiday tournaments in the state. As of last week the sixteen teams entered had a record of 15 wins and 56 losses. It is safe to say that no state challenger is among the teams entered in the tourney. Warrior fans will not complain about the tourney. We remember the long journeys to Kankakee in the snow and ice. One hundred miles of travel one way for a tourney was not our cup of tea. Traveling down Rt. 31 is more to our liking as well as many Warrior fans. The host school Elgin has yet to win a game, and looking at the pairings they may still remain looking for their first win of the season at the end of the tournament. To pick a winner this time is going to be fun. I am going to put all sixteen teams in a hat and pick a winner. There is no clear cut favorite in the tourney. My picks will be in next week's edition, long before the tourney will get under way. Hats off to a group of young people who are backing the Warriors home and away Although the Warriors haven't been winning many games, this group of boys have made themselves known throughout the area. It is a group who call themselves the "Rowdies". They go to the games, and are really vocal in their support of the Warriors. Ron Joe Freund, Bill Heinrich, Terry Greve, Bill Lang, Pat Teuber, Brad Hertel, Steve Kivley, Jim Leisten, George Worts, Annun Chonchawalit, Rich Sund and Butch Pintozzi. Keep up the good work fellows, your efforts are appreciated by the team, and the adult following of the Warriore. It is that time of the year when I have to thank all of those people at the Plaindealer, who have put up with my nonsense the past season. The proof readers, God bless them, for correcting all my mistakes, and there were many. To the people who had to rush my copy for the deadline, they have my admiration. Deadlines, deadlines, there is never an end to that work in the business. So on behalf of the McHenry High School Athletic Department, the players, cheerleaders, coaches, managers, and "Coop" I want to wish all of you fans a Merry Christmas. f s I % McHenry High Frosh Teams Defeat Crown Front row, left to right : Sara Bird.
