I A Community Celebrates CROSSWORD PUZZLE In McHenry Shores this beautiful tree is known as the "Friendship" tree, it was offered by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartel of 3216 Vista Terrace for the children to decorate. Later, free hot chocolate and cookies were served in the village annex. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Know{J -L'"" Why is it that, in most areas of the country, winter brings with it so many long, rainy spells? Winter produces more rainy spells of several days' duration than summer for several reasons. One of the main reasons is that winter's colder earth and ever-present cold air creates more of the cloud-forming or cooling ac tion that makes for cloud and rain. Warm air moving into cold winter air (a warm front) can set up a rainy area for hun dreds of miles. Since a warm front moves forward more slowly than a cold front, this mass of cloud and rain takes several days to pass overhead. Occasionally a warm front or an occluded front will be come stationary over an area, and in winter this* usually means several days of bad, rainy weather. These frontal systems are of long duration but rarely produce lightning and thunder. I V.A. He was Dewey Lee Trotter, a country preacher in Alabama. "Daddy died in 1963 in the Memorial Hospital in Anniston, Alabama," Kay said. "He was hospitalized about four weeks before he died, and I remember one of the maids, a black woman. She insisted on coming back to work on her day off, long enough to clean Daddy's r o o m . ' ' When Kay suggested that it wasn't necessary for her to do this, the maid ex plained, "Wei! you see, it. 's this way; somebody else might get in a hurry and bump Rev. Trotter's bed, and I don't want that to happen." By now, Kay's curiosity was really aroused, so she asked why this woman was so concerned about a patient she barely knew. "Mrs. Jordan," the maid explained, "there was a tim e w h e n I w a n t e d t o g o o v e r s e a s a s a m i s s i o n a r y . B u t I've only got a third-grade education, and I've been so disappointed that all I could do was work as a maid. Then one day your Daddy showed me that this hospital could be my mission field. "You see Mrs. Jordan, your Daddy gave me a pur pose for living, so that's why I want to clean his room every day that he's stil l l iving. And 1 don't want anyone to bump his bed." K. J. V Remember the "good old days" when service stations checked under the hood every time you stopped in for a fill-up? The advent of mini-serve or self serve sta tions has pretty much changed all that. Now, it's usually the owner who has to do the probing under the hoofi. Sometimes things just don't get checked at all and the result often is break down for the negligent owner. High on the list of ne glected items are drive belts and hoses In two surveys automotive repairmen placed these in the top 20% on the "most overlooked", list. Belts and hoses are easy to check, says Automotive Cooling System Institute. In their new booklet, entitled " A Q U I C K C O U R S E I N CAR CARE" the Institute urges car owners to include a thorough check of these components as part of their spring cooling system tune- up. To check hoses, wait until the engine is cool. A weak hose could burst when put to the test, covering its victim with scalding anti freeze. Squeeze the hose firmly, to feel for soft or mushy parts which indicate deterioration. Look for signs of cracking .or bulging, either of which can tell *you it is time to replace hoses. A pressure test by your service dealer can disclose weaknesses that might not otherwise Typically, says the Insti tute, belts and hoses last about three years. J. 07666. show up Most mechanics recom mend replacing upper and lower radiator hoses at the same time as deterioration of one indicates the time is approaching for others to go The same holds true for drive belts. If one belt needs replacement, think seriously about replacing the others. Most cars have two or three, and often the labor charge to replace three is no more than for one. When checking a drive belt for wear, take the trouble to give it a twist so the edge of the "V" is visible. Look for signs of cracking of the rubber or frayed fabric. When a belt is cracked, it probably is ready for replacement, as it will begin slipping and is likely to become noisy. To check HAPPY HOLIDAY.
