No matter how well your home is insulated, within a few hours your home will become very cold without a heater, and all heater blowers are run by electricity, no matter what kind of heat jfcu have, gas, oil. or electric. Also, with no elec tricity, you will not have any water or lights Now what do you do0 •Before it gets too cold, gather together the following items for your home: 1) 5 or 10 candles for emergency light ^doa^forget the matches). 2) If you buy milk in the plastic jugs, save four or five of them and fill them with water Put them in the garage or basement or another cool spot 3) In a department store, get one of those foldable Sterno stoves, several cans of Sterno, and one of those Boy Scout type cooking kits and a cheap coffee pot Then you can cook something to eat when there is no power, and make some warm water for coffee or tea. The boy Scout cooking kit is needed because Sterno will blacken the bottom of a good pot. and there is no reason to ruin a good pot Close off all of the unused rooms in the house and stay in one room yourself, and this will help prevent heat loss Also, take all the blankets into the same room to keep warmer Dress in layers instead of wearing one or two bulky pieces of clothing and you will stay warmer, and your body heat will remain with you longer In your car, it is basically the same thing Keep a few blankets in the back seat and a gallon or two of water If you get stuck in the snow and can't get out. DON'T LEAVE THE CAR'! Stay inside and; 1) Keep the car's tailpipe clear of snow so that carbon monoxide will not back up into the car 2) Keep one window open an inch or 2 to also help keep carbon monoxide out of the passenger area 3) Run the car's engine for only 10 or 15 minutes at a time to keep the interior warm. You may be there for a while, and if you run the engine for a long time, you could run out of gas. 4) Again with the Sterno. If you do run out of gas, the small cans of Sternq will give off a lot of heat. However, remember to keep one window open a little to help vent the air inside 5) Don't go out with less than one-half a tank of gas The added weight of the full tank (gasoline weighs 6 lbs , per gallon) can add to traction, and a full tank will help prevent condensation in the gas tank to help stop gas line freeze 6) If your car is off the road and in a ditch, don't run the lights or the four-way flashers Turn all the lights off to con serve the battery. If another car does come along, then flash the headlights to get their at tention 7) Keep a shovel in the trunk, and a bag or box of sand to help dig yourself out if you aren't stuck too bad Sometimes it can help 8) If you have a CB in your car, turn to Channel 9 That's the emergency channel Simply call for a 10-33 or help, or Mayday. Someone will answer and you can tell them where you are and get help Channel 19 is also a popular channel, and you should be able to get someone there Of course, if you don't really have to go out. don't If you can. combine some of those small trips into one, and make a list of things that you have to get Maybe nothing will ever happen to you in a snow storm But if you do get into trouble, maybe this will help Building Permits The McHenry county Building and Zoning department issued the following building permits in November.
