PAGE fi - PLAINDE ALER - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29.1978 Warriors Hang On To Win Defeat St. Ed's By 2 In Elgin Tourney By Dick Rabbit In a game that was not decided until the final gun. the Warriors edged out St Edward of Elgin, 52-50. in the opening round of the Elgin holiday tournament Wednesday night. With the Warriors leading by two with five seconds to play. St. Edward's guard Joe Snellgrove's desperation shot rolled off the rim to ensure a Warrior victory Pete Prust put the Warriors ahead 2-1 at the 5 minute mark of the initial period, but later in the period, the "Green Wave" took the lead and held it by a score of 12-10 at the period It was a slow first period, as both teams played catch and when open, were unable to hit the fyoop The opening minutes of the second period were a repeat of the first quarter, but a 3-point play by Jimmy Johnson tied the score at 15 for McHenry. The local crew grabbed a 19- 17 lead on Ttm Zeller's layup. but the Wave bounced back and led at the intermission 23-21. The third period saw the lead exchange hands four times, uijtil with four seconds remaining, Johnson s second 3- point play put the Warriors in the lead 40-37. That play was the spark the Warriors needed as they came f>ut in the final period with fire in their eyes. Johnson, Jensen and the Zeller brothers hit the hoop to put McHenry up by nine 49-40, with 5:45 remaining It looked as if the Warriors were going to run away from the Green Wave However, the Wave had other ideas With the Warriors throwing the ball away time after time. St. Ed's began to get back into the ballgame. In the last four minutes, Brett Thomas with a charity toss and a basket was the complete Warrior offense. However, when Snellgrove's shot rimmed the hoop at the buzzer, the Warriors came off the floor with a victory. It was a slow action game The officials let the boys push, shove . walk and run to their hearts desire. Both teams committed 13 fouls, and we are thankful the officials didn't call the game close, otherwise it may have been midnight before it all ended MCHENRY fg ft..pf tp T Zeller 4 0 3 8 Thomas 5 1 3 11 Johnson 4 5 3 13 Jensen 4 0 2 8 Prust 3 0 1 6 B Zeller 3 0 1 6 Conway 0 0 0 0 Bitterman 0 0 0 0 Totals 23 6 13 52 ST. The small Warrior team started out in a zone defense, but because of the hot shooting on the part of the Jacobs five. went into a man to man, and out scored the visitors in the second half As Coach Schafer said. "We must try a zone to keep out of foul trouble, but maybe we will have to make some changes" Sharon Smith led the local attack with 24 points followed by Sue Hut chinson's 15 Becker of Jacobs led all scoring with 27 points The sophomores won their game 22 to 16 with Sue Smith's 10 points pacing the local team VARSITY McllENRY McHEA/ffV MtHENRY 385 0144 SPECIAL MATINEES FRI. Jacobs, too. had its share of troubles Sparked by the out side shooting of Mike Hudson. Jacobs built first quarter momentum, but could not maintain it It was Johnsburg center Don Bentz who provided stability for the Skyhawks to weather the turbulent action. "Donny played a super ball game." said Skyhawk coach Bob Kies "It may have been his best game. His shooting was off. but he did well defensively and on the boards." Bentz. who with Chris Dixon were the team's leading scorers with 14 points, shot 50 percent from the field He is the ,am's most consistent scorer, usually tallying between 12 and 16 points a game "Don got some key rebounds and made some key free throws for us at the end of the game." said Kies "At 240 pounds, he doesn't get moved out of position very easily."
