Memories Of The Holiday Sometimes ihey are called forgotten but are they really? What of the 10.000 or so men, women and children who live in one of * the 28 facilities operated by the Illinois Department of Mental Health and Develop mental Disabilities? How did they fare during the holiday season? There were many who. for one reason or another, had no home, family or friends to go to. Still others were mentally or physically unable to leave the facilities. But, for those who stayed, caring and dedicated persons, employees and volunteers alike, did their best to create a festive and loving at mosphere so that the so- called forgottens would also enjoy the holiday spirit and fun. Planning started early. In schools, of fices, industrial plants and at meetings of fraternal, civic and social organizations in Illinois, and in state-line c o m m u n i t i e s o f surrounding states, people set about preparing to give of the mselves to bring the season to the emotionally ill and developmen tally disabled persons in mental facilities. As the time ap proached the planning i n t e n s i f i e d , m o r e persons joined in and t h e e x c i t e m e n t mounted. Not a person in a facility from Waukegan to Anna, spent the season in loneliness or neglect. For many, the holidays meant a trig home. For a treasured FIRST CHILD Tom and Norma Weyland, 1420 N. River road, McHenry, are the proud parents of a 7 lb. 6 oz. baby boy, Shane Harry, their first child, born Jan. 2, in McHenry hospital. Grandparents are Mrs. Doris Kelso of Franklin Park and the late Mr. Harry F. Kelso, and Russ and Fran Weyland of McHenry. FIRST DAUGHTER Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Johnson, 1 Black Twig road, Rolling Meadows, has a 7 lb. 8Vfe oz. girl, JoAnne Amy, Dec. 18, in Lutheran General hospital. The Johnson's third child and first daughter, JoAnn is welcomed by Robert, 10, and Greg, 6. Paternal grandparents from McHenry are Mr. and Mrs. Russell E. Johnson. Mrs. Amy Tinley,' Chicago, is the maternal grandmother. A BOY Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Johnson (Sherry Messer), McHenry, are the parents of a son, Thomas Wayne, Jr., born few hours or days those people would be with loved ones or friends. For those who stayed, people from all walks of life in hundreds of cities, towns and hamlets came forward with concern and generosity to become the "family" to the hospitalized. -A Chicago newspaper columnist was joined by a metropolitan radio station as readers and listeners were call%d on to remember the children and adults in the state operated and community facilities for ' the developmentally disabled. Thousands of dollars and van loads of gifts will assure months of remembered bir thdays and commissary treats, long after the happy holidays. - T h e n a t i o n a l l y f a m o u s C o l e Marionettes gave two performances in one-^ facility - their annual appearance. -School choirs and bands from large and small school districts converged on facilities all over Illinois to bring cheer and en tertainment. - C h u r c h e s a n d synagogs donated baked goods and craft items for holiday parties. -Civic and fraternal g r o u p s i n v i t e d I D - MHDD residents to participate in their groups' activities - ride in the parade, join the party at the lodge, come along on the caroling trips. -Some shopping malls set aside special hours and sales personnel to assist the mentally retarded in doing their C h r i s t m a s a n d Chanukah shopping Dec. 30, in Delnor hospital, St. Charles. -J Born: Jan. 3, to Mr. and Mrs. John Mikeska, of McHenry, a boy; Jan. 4, to Mr. and Mrs. Randy Norgard, Wonder Lake, a boy; to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Housby, Ringwood, a girl. Born: Jan. 5, to Mr. and Mrs. William Siefert, McHenry, a -College fraternities and sororities invited residents of neighboring mental facilities to join in skating and sledding parties. -Veterans' organ izations and aux iliaries put on parties with all the trimmings for veterans and their families and orphans in the facilities. In all cases, the love and generosity extended by persons of good will all over the state came without expectation of recognition or return. Most AT the outpouring of holiday wishes and cheer were offered anonymously. A n e s p e c i a l l y poignant moment oc curred when a middle- aged, severely retarded and physically han dicapped woman lifted her hand from the arm of her wheelchair to touch the sleeve of a burly high school athlete. He was about to leave her cottage at the conclusion of a sing- along. She barely managed to say "Merry Christmas, thank you." He left quickly in an effort to prevent his classmates from seeing the tear roll down his cheek. Others didn't bother to hide their tears - tears of joy and realization that their holiday would be more meaningful because of what they had done -- taken the time to care and do for others. The unselfish efforts of countless people provided a happy holiday season for 1DMHDD residents. They were not forgot ten!
