PAGE 6 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY J2, 1979 "EARL WALSH So I Hear _SP0RTS EDITOR 1 We get news releases telling about a shortage of officials to handle various sports. Watching TV, pro and college basketball coaches, also some high school games got me to thinkin'. When some coaches retire from their chosen field, they can step right into officiating. After all, they are doing both right now Trouble is -- they aren't getting paid for telling the officials how wrong they are. Sometimes I wonder how come some coaches think every call against their team is wrong while every call against the other team is right. Oh, not our coaches! •JDoes everybody bring a hat hQme from a visit to Ireland? Harry Dean did. ^The Hickeys of Lakeland Pfcrk were over there and brought one home for the man "himself". Now he wants to see Jferry Rogers' lid to see which <pie is snappyist. • tlf you aren't picking the Pittsburg Steelers to beat the Dallas Cowboys for the pro fjiotball championship, you are iif the minority. .•Those Steelers are bruisers. Xhey are strong on the ground aQd dazzling through the air. '3n the old days of western st&ries. the cowboys always b$at the Indians. "•The war game has switched and the Cowboys of the south wpn't have the horses to run the Steelers of the east into the hill. •JThe Forester State Bfsketball Tournament is (juning to McHenry again in March for the umpteenth time, 'tifcere must be a reason. Getting a cab to get to State Street was a bit of a problem. There was no pattern. Some! cabs came up to the entrance, others picked up the brave ones who ran into the street way back. Our cab driver had the best idea. He thinks people should form a line like they do at a ticket window and each one take his turn. Th$ column will keep you postedwifn names of baseball personalities who will attend the annual baseball dinner at Johnsburg Jan. 22. We have held back names since some were not definite. Through the committee Tuesday night, word came that Vince Lloyd will definitely be the M.C. Of course, we reported earlier that Moose Skowron will be the main speaker. The committee has now verified that little Harry Chappis (5'4") will be here. He is the bouncy little fellow who came up to the Sox late in the last season and was given a real chance at the shortstop job. The fans loved him. * A new name has come to us. Larry Bittner of the Cubs has accepted an invitation. That brings it up to date, but calls will come in as other names arev added. Ernie Banks? Not definite. Met Jerry Kern on the homeward bound train Tuesday evening. Said we could quote him as saying the Sox will be back this year. Am sure he meant back up. - * • ..>* • n* , Iv Jerry also said he \vill be breathing down Art Jackson's neck next summer for the Club Championship at McHenry Country Club. He plans to beat Art for the honors. My reply to Jerry, "That I gotta see". I Bents Nets 23, S. Dixon 16 As Streak Hits 8 By Randy Swikle The Johnsburg Skyhawks walloped Round Lake in a 74-56 non-conference basketball contest Tuesday night in the Johnsburg gymnasium. The victory boosted Johnsburg's record to 10-3, while Round Lake is holding a disappointing 1-13 record for the season. It was the eighth straight win for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks controlled the pace of the ball game from the initial jump ball and had no trouble in building and holding a commanding lead. * Don Bentz hit the bucket for 23 points to become John- sburg's high point man. While most of his shots came from under the basket, he did pump in several 15-footers as evidence that he hasn't lost his accuracy from out. Scott Dixon hit 50 percent from the field as he netted eight baskets for 16 points. Tom Schoenig and Brett Zimbick each scored 9 for the Skyhawks. Senior forward Lenny Pecucci demonstrated his determination by making two spectacular dives for loose balls during the evning. He also scored three field goals. Johnsburg plays Harvard tonight in a home conference game. The Harvard squad is 2-2 in conference competition. Johnsburg is in second place in the Shark conference with a 2-1 record THREE POINT PLAY-Johnsburg center Don Bentz flips this soft turn-around hook shot toward the hoop as he is fouled by Round Lake's Bill Rogalski. The shot swished through the net and Bentz added the toss from the charity stripe to complete the first quarter, three-point play, as the Skyhawks went on to rout Round Lake, 74-56 Tuesday night at Johnsburg. The 6*5" senior added ten other field goals to finish with 23 points in the game, to lead his team to its eighth straight win, which upped the Skyhawk record to 10-3. This Friday, its back to Shark conference play, as Johnsburg, 2-1 conference and in second place, hosts Harvard, with a 2-2 conference record. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD JOIINSBl'RG fg ft pf tp S. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Cagers Cary-Grove On Friday Night By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig will try and regroup his Warriors after two losses last weekend, as they travel to Cary Grove tonight in a Fox Valley game. The Warriors lost a heart- breaker at the gun last Friday to Woodstock 49 to 47, and then let Fremd of Palatine defeat them Saturday night 71 to 61. The Trojans are currently 2 and 2 in the Fox Valley, a step up the ladder over the Warriors. The Trojans are led by 5'10" Jeff Kightlinger and 6'2" Pete Jauhiainen both seniors who saw a lot of playing .time last season. Another senior 6'0" Jeff Downs had had the hot hand for the Trojans the past several weeks, and will be the one to stop Friday night. $ The Warriors after a poorly played game on Friday night, turned it all around Saturday night against Fremd, but the taller Vikings had too much rebounding power, and free shooting ability (23 of 26) for the Warriors to overcome. Tonight both teams are matched in height evenly. So for one of the few times this season the Warriors are going to play against a team their own size. Let's hope they can play the same caliber of basketball tonight than they played against Fremd. If that is the case the Warriors should notch another victory in the Fox Valley.
