(Continued from page 10) McHenry Police department, Charles Ackerman and Gary W. Leider were presented resolutions by Mayor Stanek commending their work during a fire in McHenry Aug. 4. Rust and Special Officer Ackerman were praised for their brave work in checking the building adjoining a burning garage for occupants. Leider was honored for pulling James R. Ball, Sr., from his burning car after Ball had apparently suffered a heart attack and crashed into the garage. The Illinois Law Enforcement commission recently notified McHenry high school that it has received final approval for a grant to fund its intensive in­ tervention program. This is a program designed to deal with student truancy and potential droputs. The program will be dealing with early iden­ tification of potential problem students. Mayor Stanek and three of McHenry's aldermen, in separate interviews with the Plaindealer, all agreed that the biggest pcoble^n facing the city is the manner in which/it will grow. A strike that started with Chicago & North Western Railway clerks, and spread to other employees, halted operation of all North Western trains. The* board of McHenry County college approved the budget for fiscal 1979. It totals $2,771,819 for the Education fund, $384,775 for the Building and Maintenance fund, $25,000 for the Site and Construction fund and $293,410 for the Bond and Interest fund. Angered when it became apparent the city's insurance package, with its approximate annual premiums of $90,000, would go to an out of town firm, First Ward Alderman William Bolger resigned as chairman of the Insurance committee. Despite strong objections by Bolger and Alderman Raymond Smith, the Council voted 6-2 to award the in­ surance package to Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. of Rolling Meadows for one year. The board of High School District 156 approved the negotiated salary agreement of a two-year contract for teachers. This is believed to be the first time in the history of the district that a two-year contract will be in effect. A closed campus, less students (including \many missing friends) and fewer teachers greeted West campus students, teachers and ad­ ministrators when they returned to school. With the opening of Johnsburg pigh school this fall, the enrollment at West campus dropped to approximately 850 students. The McHenry City Council's consensus is that it will annex the Martin-Anderson property if the final draft of the an­ nexation agreement meets with their approval. Two of the three local public school districts, McHenry Elementary District No. 15 and Johnsburg District 12, the latter including both high and grade schools, approved budgets for the year ahead. The total figure was somewhat under $10 million. Later this month McHenry High School District 156 is expected to approved a budget of just under $5 million. The McHenry County college budget given an okay by the board recently amounted to $3.5 million and the Montini budget was $239,125 to educate young people through eight grade in two private schools. Illinois Bell will begin trenching operations this week to add new underground facilities in McHenry. Tne new cable will provide facilities for future growth in the west and southwestern areas of McHenry.
