Hautzinger Concrete handed Fox Hole its first loss of the season and moved into a tie for first place in the McHenry Men's 16-inch softball league. The win was the sixth in a row for Hautzinger's. The McHenry Men's 16-inch softball league announced its all-star team and determined that the league all-stars would play Fox Hole. Old Bridge Softball club placed four players on the starting all-star team, Outfielders Joe Dehn and Tom Les, first baseman Rick Wakitsch and pitcher Greg Freund. Also named to the starting lineup were catcher Jerry Brodin and third baseman Vern Peterson, second baseman Twig Miller, short centerfielder Dick Meyers, and outfielder Dick Kazlausky and Chuck Marke as shortstop. The Craft-Zavichas Golf scnool tor ladies came to McHenry Country club. The school includes instruction on putting, chipping, pitching sand, all irons, woods and uneven lies. It's a full course on "How to Cure" that hook, slice, topped shot and loss of distance. f JULY The fourth annual All-Star game was suddenly cancelled only 10 days before the scheduled contest was to be held. The matchup which was fast becoming a classic con frontation between the two McHenry softball leagues, SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE would have been played July 6. Cub, John Mengalt of the Bulls Both All-Star squads were picked on June 26 in an ticipation of the double header in which both twelve-inch and sixteen-inch softball are played. After three years both leagues had battled to three wins each and softball fans of all ages enjoyed watching the "best" from each league play ball. As the season reaches a close McHenry Recreation is still in first place. They won two games which has given them complete control of first place. The game betwen McHenry Rec and Toddler Shop was filled with excitement with a score of 21-20. This was the game which gave McHenry Rec sole possession of first place. Area youths attending the Eighth Annual Tri-State University Golf camp held at Zollner golf course on the Angola, Indiana campus in cluded Joe Bauml, John Costigan, Mike Lawler, Terry Remke, Jr., and Jeffrey Schaefer. The McHenry American Legion baseball team lost to Geneva in extra innings, 4-3, dropping their record to 2 wins, 9 losses. M The first place Old Bridge team took on the "best of the rest" in the "McHenry Area 12- inch league. The Old Bridge topped their 5-2 win in game one with an 11-8 decision in a rain shortened six inning second game. Harold Michels received the first place trophy from Lou Hartlieb of Marian Central for winning Marian's playday. Jim Finks, Chicago Bear general manager, Ernie Banks, Mr. and Rick Talley of the Chicago Tribune were special guests. The Old Bridge softball club rebounded from a semi-final game loss to the Teenage All- Stars, to defeat the All-Stars twice in the championship games to win McHenry 16-inch softball tournament. The Teenage Stars were the sur prise of the tournament as they played consistently good ball and were the only team to complete the winner's bracket of the tournament without a loss. Several area youths attended the Medalist Boys' Basketball camp and returned with awards for their outstanding performances. The camps was held on the campus of North Central college in Naperville. Boys who participated in the camp and will be attending McHenry high school in the fall were Charlie Wegener, Scott Larsen, John Huff, Dan Long and Bob Zeller. Marian Central high school was represented by Steve Schiera, Tom McMann, Jim McDonough, Scott Truckenbrod and Mike Sabatka. Junior high school participants were Bill Her mann and Mark Thompson. Joe Paul of DesPlaines crossed the finish line at the end of the McHenry Marathon for a new record. The 21-year- old DesPlaines man completed the 7 mile course in 36 minutes, 43 seconds. He finished almost a minute ahead of the second finisher, John Mclnerney of McHenry. Andy Oakley of McHenry was third. Plaindealer reporter, Joe Dehn, received answers to his questions concerning the Bears' quarterback position 26 -FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1979 from new head coach, Neil Armstrong, during arf> in terview at the Bears' camp. The McHenry American Legion baseball team defeated Marengo twice to win the county American Legion title. McHenry finished with a 5 win, 3 loss record in county Action, while Marengo and Crystal Lake were tied at 3 wins, 4 r AUGUST The McHenry Pigtail team won the Woodstock tournament by defeating Algoqnuin 5-4. It was no surprise to anyone as the Old Bridge Softball club won the 1978 McHenry Area 12- inch league title. The Bridge went into the July 17 doubleheader with an un defeated record and came out undefeated with 11-8 and 3-1 victories over Raymond's Bowl. The annual Jaycee Youth tennis tourney was a big suc cess. Over sixty of the better young tennis players in the area exhibited their skills on the courts at West Campus. Nelson Roltsch skippered his butterfly class boat "Super Scow" along with crew Bill Slater, to win the Top Junior Title in the Butterfly National Regatta held at White Lake, Mich. The seven race regatta had 62 boats registered. The Rusty Nail, alias McHenry county, won the 1978 State Slowpitch Farm Bureau tournament held in Bloomington. It was their third championship in 5 years. A young McHenry man swam nearly thirty miles, for almost twenty-one hours to earn money for the American Diabetes association. Jack Barnas, who lives on River road in McHenry and attends Western Illinois university, left the Snug Harbor boat club at 5:45 a.m. Monday morning and got out of the water at 3 a.m. Tuesday near the Route 120 bridge, after more than 21 hours in the water. ' The first annual John J. Zriny Memorial 15-year old tour nament was finished with area baseball leagues invited to send an all star team to compete in the tourney. The Dundee All- Stars defeated McHenry ;n the championship game. The Fox Hole won its first league championship ever in the McHenry Men's 16-inch softball league as they defeated Hautzinger Concrete 7-4. The Farmer's Almanac has been crowned the champ of the McHenry Women's Softball league after they defeated Brake Parts 10-3. Brake Parts was defending playoff champ of the league and had won the title the last two years in a row. Warrior Bob Zeller fires in a two-pointer against the Crown Vikings. Zeller, a sophomore, was the high scorer in the game for McHenry as he netted 16 points. It wasn't enough as Crown easily defeated the Warriors 76-49.
