/ PAGE 19-PLAINDEALER -WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24. 1979 Sunnyside Area Betty Messer 344-2494 Five Village Offices Will Be Decided April 17 will be election day for several of the village of ficials. There are four trustee positions and the village clerk's office. There are three 4-year trustee and one 2-year trustee positions open in this election. The clerk's office is for two more years; this is a 4-year position, but since Eleanor Schuberth who was the elected clerk in April of 1977 resigned and present clerk, Betty Messer, was appointed by President Nolan, the clerk's office is open for the remaining two years. Petitions are available from the clerk for those who would like to be on the April .ballot. These petitions must be returned with the proper amount of signatures by Feb. 12. Trustees Ivar Wendall, John Miedzianowski and Bill Mit chell have received petitions to run for reelection. Also running for position of village clerk is Betty Messer. VEHICLE STICKERS The sale of village stickers has been very slow to date. A reminder to all residents of the Village of Sunnyside, all residents must display a village sticker on each of their vehicles. Those who fail to do so within the allotted time are subject to a fine; plus the fee for the sticker. To all new residents if you live in Lake Dawnwood, Sudeenew or Emberwood subdivisions you are part of the village proper and required to display a sticker. For information regarding stickers call Village Clerk Betty Messer, 385-6023. WELCOME NEIGHBOR < The village extends a warm welcome to Margaret and John Benson who moved into a new home on Channel Beach a short time ago. The Bensons come to Sunnyside from Maryland. John is employed by Baxter Lab's and was tranferred here from Maryland. We hope you like residing in Sunnyside. Once warm weather gets here j'm sure you'll find this area a pleasant, place to live and warm, friendly people for neighbors. BIRTHDAYS This week's birthday greetings go to Buddy Pflug and Ricky Perschke who both do their celebrating on Jan. 18. Jan. 21 is the special day for Bill Zawislak. Best wishes for a happy day and many more to come. Belated birthday wishes to Kathy Mitchell Lindley who had her special day on Jan. 6. Would you like to wish someone a happy birthday in the paper or a happy an niversary. Or do you know someone who* has taken a winter vacation or had visitors from out of town. If so, please give me a call. I'm always pleased to hear from you. MISSED COLUMN Sorry I missed getting my column in last week, but my daughter was in an accident and I didn't get in to the newspaper office. She's fine, the car is just rearranged some. Now I am writing this as I watch it snow again. It's 5:30 a.m. but it's been snowing for some time again. The problem is where do we go with the new snowfall? We are still in the process of digging out from last week's storm and here comes more. Though we had a few irate citizens during the storm of Jan. 13 over the problem of snow removal we seemed to survive the ordeal. Paul May and his men did a great job. His men worked 20 out of 24 hours to get our roads open. And they aren't through yet, they're still moving snow making room for the new storm. We all tried to do the best job possible under the circumstances. It may interest residents of our area to know that we come under the federal governments aid program for disaster areas, as a result of last week's storm. When you see what the storm did to a city the size of Chicago with all its equipment and manpower I think you have to agree we did pretty well. A word of warning next time you hear storm warnings and snow watch, be sure your freezer is stocked, and necessities in good supply. We can't control Mother Nature when she kicks up her heels and the snows come. VILLAGE MEETINGS For the second time this month a village meeting was canceled. Tuesday, Jan. 16 was to be the second monthly) meeting of the Village of Sunnyside. It was canceled due to the storm. Parking wasn't available and the weather wasn't too great. The Jan. 2 meeting wasn't held because not enough came to have a quorum and conduct a meeting. It was a bitter cold night. So starting Feb. 6, 1979 the Village of Sunnyside will be nuttting"! its meetings at the Johnsburg Junior high school. They will be held there until further notice. Meetings will be held in Rooms 30 and 31 and start at 8 p.m. So be sure to make a note of this and see you Feb: 6 at the Johnsburg Junior high. GET-WELL WISHES. The many friends of John Choyinski of 4502 Riverdale in Pistakee Terrace wish him well. John was in a snowmobile accident a couple of weeks ago and has spent the last couple of weeks in the McHenry hospital. But I'm happy to say John is well on the road to recovery and in fact hopes to come home any day. It will be a white before^ John can return to snowmobiling though. He'll be recuperating at home for a while longer. John and his wife Carley are very grateful for the many cards and plants that came N*ishing John a speedy recovery BIRTHDAYS This week's birthday greetings go to Robert Per schke, Bill Sandell Jr., Joe Metzger, Maureen Naurauter, and Sam DePasquale all do their celebrating on Jan. 24. Darlene Heim has her day Jan. 25. Jan. 26 is my day and I always say it snows on my birthday. Remember the blizzard last year on Jan. 26? And how about Jan. 26, 1967? I hope this year it doesn't snow on Jan. 26. We've had enough already! ANNIVERSARY This week's anniversary couple are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Metzger. Their special day is Jan. 26. Best wishes for a happy day and many more happy years together. And no snow. Wonder Lake Anne Sowers 653-9549 Candlelight Bowl Slate February 17 It's time to get out those bowling balls and polish them up for the Firemen's auxiliary of Company Two Candlelight Bowl Feb. 17. It will be held at the Edgetown Bowl in Wood stock beginning at 9 p.m. Included in the price of your ticket will be the bowling, prizes, and food after the bowling is finished. For more information on the purchase of tickets, you could call Betty Sullivan, chairperson of the event, at 653-6016. Preparing Jerky^ Homemade jerky is relatively easy to prepare. Slice flank steak, lengthwise with the grain, into very thin strips and spread onto racks before drying in the oven. Use a low oven tem perature and cook until the jerky feels hard and is dry to the touch. Jerky can be easily stored in plastic bags or in jars with tight- fitting covers. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Families living ip Wonder Lake in Harrisoh School District 36 who have a child eligible for kindergarten for the 1979-80 school year should contact the school at 653-2311. A child is eligible for kin dergarten for the 1979-80 school year if he or she will be 5 years old before Dec. 1, 1979. The school is now in the process of making a list of those children and will be mailing registration information to the families during the month of February. If you are new to the area, or do not hear from them, feel free to call the school. WEATHER WOES If you are like me, you not only do not want to look at any more snow, but also do not want to hear of any more records that we have set with inches or degrees below zero! Things are bad when there is too much snow to go snowmobiling. Not being an avid fan of the sport, I haven't quite figured that one out, but that's what I was told. I would have given up my favorite super warm down jacket to get out to my Woman's club meeting, but just like many other meetings this past week, it was cancelled. Thanks to the help of a McHenry township snowplow driver and Bill Etten,I was able to make it out of the six-foot snow drift on the side of our driveway and venture from the west side to the east side. I plowed right into that drift and probably would have been • JEWEL CATALOG OUTLET STORE • JEWEL CATALOG OUTLET STORE • 1EWEL CATALOG CilTLET J I W I L Mercnmdisi Cliardikk Center A DIVISION OF JEWEL Mon. Something that brightened my inner soul was seeing an article in the Tribune an nouncing that the annual Flower show will be coming to McCormack Place the la^jt week of March. Flowers--can you believeHt? I want to! PINEWOOD DERBY Cub Scouts and Webelos of Pack 145 will be displaying and racing their pinewood derby cars Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in Christ the King, church hall. This is a father-and-son project that is done every year. There are certain rules and regulations that must be followed such as proper weight. The winners in this competition go on to compete against other local winners.'"* BROWNIES ARE BACK There is good news for all those girls who were active Brownies and then had to leave their uniforms hanging in the closet because of no leaders. Two ladies have now come forward to offer their services and have called all former Brownies. At this time no new girls are being accepted since they have just enough for the two ladies to handle. If anyone is interested in helping out they would love to hear from you. INTERESTING ORGANIZATIONS ^ Several weeks ago, I began a little series on some of our clubs and organizations. Today will end that series. I hope you found one that might be of interest to you. If nothing else. I hoped to show you some of the wonderful things accomplished by these groups. The Firemen's auxiliary of company One has recently elected new officers. They are: President, Tracy Stolle; vice- president, Pat Diederich; secretary, Wally O'Brien; and treasurer, Donna Humphrey. They took over their offices this month. The purpose of the auxiliary is to help the fire department. It has purchased white blankets for the ambulances and helped in paying for the men's jackets. The auxiliary members also volunteer to bring coffee or water to the firemen as they are fighting a fire. If the fire is long one, they also have sand wiches ready for the men when they come back to the firehouse. Membership is open to any woman from Wonder Lake. You do not have to be the wife of a fireman to belong to Company One auxiliary. They meet the third Tuesday of every month at the firehouse beginning at 8 p.m. On the west side of the lake, we have the firemen's auxiliary of Company Two. They meet the first Thursday of every month at their firehouse, also beginning at 8 p.m. To be a member of this auxiliary. though. your husband has to be a fireman. They have worked hard raising money to furnish their new firehouse, purchasing the refrigerator and stove along with some fire equipment. They also bring coffee and water to the firefighters and have sandwiches ready for them on return from a long fire Food is kept on hand for this purpose in the freezer but if they do need anything, Helen Asthmus opens her store at any hour to help out. Helen's husband, who has passed away, was one of the founders of Company Two, so she has been made an honorary member of the auxiliary. She also donated money for the siren for the new firehouse in her husband's honor. Not only does the auxiliary help the fire department, but they also make up food baskets, and this year, distributed seven of them to the needy on the west side of Wonder Lake. They are a very active group under the leadership of Lyn Albrecht, their president. Many ladies enjoy getting together to play cards and to just get caught up onthe latest gossip. One group of ladies from Wonder Lake do this with a little twist. It is called the Charity Card club and they get together in each other's homes once a month. There are three tables of four and they play Canasta. Each player donates a dollar each month except the hostess and when the kitty is built up to a sizable amount, it is given to some worthwhile organization They have been meeting for about five years and have contributed money to the Cancer fund. Easter Seals, and also helped out with different groups fixing Christmas baskets. More players are needed. If you are interested you could become a regular member or be put on the sub list. For more information, call Joanne Firnback at 653-5326.
