SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER • PAGE 13 • Dream kitchen--first plan and then enjoy the results The kitchen is probably the most used and lived-in area of your home. It should be a warm, creative and exciting place to be in. If you don't feel that way about your kitchen, then perhaps it's time to do some positive kitchen planning. Home economists from Whirlpool Corporation ad vise that for the first step in planning the kitchen of your dreams, you will need a pen- c i l , g r a p h p a p e r a n d a measuring tape. Measure your constants first--the wall-to-wall di mensions of the room and the width, depth and height of your appliances. Draw your present kitchen on the graph paper, using each square to represent an appropriate number of feet or inches. Now draw it again . . . but this time draw it the way you would like it to be. "The configuration of al most every kitchen is indi vidualized,' ' say the home economists, "but there arc four basic shapes to most kitchens." » The "Island"' kitchen is a large square or rectangular area of counter and storage space surrounding a center island equipped with a work ing surface. This design is very convenient for large families in which people work on the food preparation together. The "L-shaped" kitchen uses two adjoining walls for counter space and appliances and is one of the most popu lar and widely Used in Ameri can homes. It provides good counter space and few wasted steps. The "U-shaped" kitchen is excellent for kitchens with adjoining dinettes or in h o m e s w i t h f u l l d i n i n g rooms. Surrounded by work ing space, the cook has only to turn around to move from one preparation area to an other. The"Galley or Corridor" shape % perhaps the least flexible of the four basic shapes, however it can be very efficient. It is usually l o n g a n d n a r r o w w i t h a p p l i a n c e s a n d w o r k i n g space on one or both sides of the open center space. "Once you have decided upon the shape you want your kitchen to take," say the home economists, "the next thing to consider is re locating your appliances and counter space." The "working triangle," with the sink positioned be tween the range and the re frigerator, is a very conve nient arrangement for meal preparation. It allows you to .move from chore to chore with the fewest steps. Here are some other im portant points to remember when planning your kitchen: Sink--The ideal sink loca tion is under a window with a view, but away from the main traffic flow of the room. "Be especially careful about choosing the location for your sink area," caution the home economists. Mov ing the sink is not as easy as moving appliances and can be a costly endeavor. If your kitchen plan does not have an appropriate win dow, plan to have plenty of light above the sink area. Range -- Keep the range a w a y f r o m w i n d o w s o r doors, where it can be a safety hazard to curtains or people passing by. It is hand iest near the sink, but allow at least two feet of counter space between the two. Refrigerutor-€rvezer--' "THE 'GALLEY OR CORRIDOR" shaped kitchen, as shown above, can be very efficient and pleasant with a minimum amount of space," say Whirlpool hom economists. "However," they caution, "good planning and proper placement of appliances is essential to make it a smoothly functioning operation." WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24.1979 Usually a corner is the best place for this appliance to provide the smoothest flow for the work area. Be sure to allow full-width clearance to open the door. Some model refrigerators have reversible doOrs which you might want to remember when considering a neW pur chase. Dishwasher--This appli ance is now almost a necessi ty in many busy homes. Built-in units are best placed on either side of the sink, close to the water supply. Portables can go anywhere and then simply rolled to the sink when needed. Don't forge;t to plan space for another member of the "clean-up" crew^=-the trash c o m p a c t o r . T h i s h a n d y nee should be posi t i o n e d n e a r t h e s i n k a n d t h e dishwasher for the most con venience. Whirlpool home econo mists advise that, "next to the proper placement of your kitchen appliances, planning the counter top space is of extreme importance to the smooth operation of your kitchen." "Your new kitchen plan should provide as much as possible. "With the proper placement of your appliances a n d p l e n t y o f c o u n t e r space," they say, "you're well on your way to a dream kitchen." STOP STAINS A c c i d e n t a l l y s p i l l a cocktail, a cup of coffee, a glass of milk"' Quick, get the club soda. Just pour it on the wiped up spill, let it fizz, and wipe it up. MARKET LISTS Keep a sheet of paper in a c o n v e n i e n t p l a c e i n t h e kitchen, attached to the door of the refrigerator with a magnet.
